Xiaomi Automobile SU7 debuts, Lei Jun: 149,000 yuan? Don’t even think about it!

Maybe Xiaomi SU7 is indeed a bit expensive, but "it's expensive for a reason."

Before the release of Xiaomi SU7, Lei Jun admitted that it was not a cheap car and was a bit expensive.

Next, let’s take a look. As Xiaomi’s first car, how expensive is the SU7?

When making cars, technology comes first

This conference split Xiaomi Auto’s technology into five parts:

  • Intelligent driving
  • Smart cockpit
  • super motor
  • Battery
  • One-piece die-casting

As Lei Jun said, SU7 does bring us a lot of surprises.

1. Intelligent driving

As early as a year ago, Xiaomi's intelligent driving technology met with us. Today, Lei Jun divided it into three parts and introduced them one by one.

Xiaomi will develop its own zoom BEV (bird's eye view) perception technology to allow vehicles to change different visual solutions in different scenes, like human eyes, to perceive the environment in real time and adjust dynamically.

For example, in the parking lot environment, the algorithm can divide the entire parking lot into millions of grids, each grid size is 5cm. This kind of accuracy can accurately identify the opening and closing status of the ground lock; when driving on urban roads, it will expand to 160m, while on the highway, it will be 250m away.

No matter what scenario you encounter, there is a suitable perception solution.

Super-resolution occupancy network technology allows vehicles to better identify the appearance of objects in the surrounding scene. It can describe obstacles and events as a block, coupled with vector algorithms, combine these independent blocks into a model composed of continuous surfaces. , so that SU7 has the ability to see objects clearly, and can even accurately identify the outlines of special-shaped obstacles, such as telephone poles, parking poles, etc.

Finally, there is the large model of the road. This technology can generate road topology in real time and accurately generate corresponding driving guidance lines based on road conditions. It can judge road conditions in real time just like humans, and can smoothly bypass construction and blocked road sections.

Lei Jun demonstrated real-life scenes of city navigation, automatic car search in parking lots, and automatic parking in mechanical garages. The large road model allows vehicles to smoothly reverse into a mechanical garage with only 0.05m left and right gap.

In addition to the blessing of algorithms, these functions also rely on powerful hardware systems. The chip configuration of SU7 smart driving is also in line with the mainstream of the industry:

  • Dual NVIDIA Orin X chips, total computing power 508 TOPS
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 automotive chip
  • 27 sensing hardware: lidar × 1, high-definition camera × 11, millimeter wave radar × 3, ultrasonic radar × 12

2. Intelligent cockpit with full ecosystem of software and hardware

This should be the most surprising part of the entire press conference. Xiaomi allowed other manufacturers to see the difference in using the same ideas as mobile phones to build cars.

Lei Jun said that they moved the tablet directly to the central control screen, and it was a 16.1-inch 3K ultra-clear tablet.

The size of the HUD head-up display is actually 56 inches, with a brightness of 13,000 nits, which can cover all light environments.

The dashboard below flips over every time the vehicle is started. This is very supercar-like.

At the same time, the latest Xiaomi tablet can be hung on the back of the front seat, and the car mode can be directly activated, allowing the tablet to become the vehicle's control panel, adjusting the air conditioning, audio, and even the front and rear of the passenger seat.

Lei Jun said that one of the biggest advantages of SU7's car-machine system is that there is almost no cost to get started, and it is no different from operating a mobile phone or tablet. The car-machine startup is also relatively fast, taking only 1.49 seconds on average. OTA upgrades also do not take too long. The smart cockpit upgrade can be completed in 3 minutes, and the entire vehicle OTA can be completed in 30 minutes.

These advantages are all achieved by ThePaper OS. In addition, the linkage between cars and mobile phones will become smoother with the support of ThePaper OS.

After the car owner gets in the car, the mobile phone and the car can automatically connect to the screen and the navigation, video, Feishu, etc. on the mobile phone can be displayed in full screen with just a "pull", realizing cross-end interconnection and seamless flow.

The combination of Xiaomi Auto and Xiaomi Ecosystem did not disappoint everyone.

3. The world’s highest speed motor

This time Xiaomi brought 3 self-developed motors.

The first motors installed on Xiaomi SU7 are "V6" and "V6s".

Xiaomi Super Motor V6 is a dedicated motor for the 400V platform with an output power of 220 kW. It will most likely be used in the standard version of SU7. The V6s, specially designed for the 800V high-voltage platform, has an output power of 275 kW.

In terms of speed, both motors have reached 21,000 rpm, ranking first in the industry.

V8s, which will not be available to everyone until 2025, has also completed development and mass production. Lei Jun said that this is currently the fastest and most powerful motor with the following parameters:

  • Maximum horsepower 578PS
  • Peak power 425kw
  • Peak torque 635N·m
  • Maximum efficiency 98.11%

What is even more surprising is that V8s currently reaches an extremely exaggerated speed in the laboratory: 35,000rpm. Although there is still a certain distance from mass production, this does not prevent future Xiaomi cars from becoming a highly competitive high-performance electric car with the support of this motor.

Xiaomi is currently developing three motors at the same time. The 21,000rpm V6/V6s is already on the market. The 27,200rpm V8s is expected to be launched in 2025. The rotor pre-research technology in the laboratory still needs some time. At present, Xiaomi has applied for 155 patents in motor technology and obtained 60 of them.

When Lei Jun introduced the self-developed motor, he rarely roared, which shows how important this technology is to Xiaomi.

4. Top battery technology

▲Xiaomi has a self-developed 800V high-voltage platform, and the actual voltage can reach 871V

The battery pack under the 800V high-voltage platform was jointly developed by Xiaomi and CATL, and it took thousands of engineers two years to complete. In addition, Xiaomi has also developed its own CTB body-battery integrated battery technology, which not only improves the strength of the entire vehicle, but also effectively reduces the vertical height of the vehicle and expands the interior space.

The overall thickness of the battery pack is controlled at 120mm, the volume efficiency reaches 77.8%, and the capacity can reach 132kWh. Lei Jun proudly said that this self-developed battery can achieve a battery life of at least 1,000km.

Battery safety is a topic that everyone is very concerned about, and Xiaomi has also provided its own solution.

Xiaomi can ensure that when the battery is fully charged at 55°C, even if the water cooling system does not work, the battery pack will not produce an open flame and there will be no heat spread. This is due to its heat dissipation and insulation capabilities brought about by its 17 layers of high-voltage insulation protection.

The battery pack has double large-surface water cooling, with an area of 7.8m², four times the industry average, and 165 pieces of aerogel and insulation materials commonly used in space suits are placed on both sides of the battery core, which can withstand temperatures of more than 1,000 degrees. high temperature.

In terms of collision protection, Xiaomi's battery pack provides 3 layers of top support + 3 layers of side seam support + 8 layers of bottom protection, a total of 14 layers of hard-core protection, and successfully passed the IP6K9K sealing test.

At the same time, the safety warning system function of the Vehicle Transport Synergy can detect more than 800 battery cell signals per second; in an emergency, this system can cut off the current within 4 milliseconds to ensure the safety of the passenger compartment.

The biggest highlight of SU7 battery safety is the "cell inversion technology". The pressure relief valve in the battery cell faces the ground. When the battery cell encounters thermal runaway, it will not harm the passengers.

Finally, the battery thermal management of Xiaomi cars has been upgraded to a "dual-mode heat pump" based on the heat pump air conditioner commonly used in the industry.

The first mode is called "Exclusive hot supply", which is directly supplied to member warehouses.

The second mode is called "one heat, multiple uses", which not only supplies member compartments, but also battery packs and other places that need to be heated. This technology can absorb heat from cold air to heat the battery pack in extreme weather of minus 20 degrees Celsius.

In addition, the "three heat source main unit heating technology" can also connect heat pump air conditioners, heaters, electric drives, etc. in series to collect waste heat generated when large components are working to provide heat for the passenger compartment and battery.

Backed by a series of battery and thermal management technologies, Lei Jun set a flag at the press conference: Xiaomi wants to be the king of electric car battery life in winter.

5. 9100-ton integrated large die-casting technology

In 2020, Tesla used 6,000 tons of large die-casting at the Shanghai Gigafactory and integrated more than 70 parts into one model, driving a new trend in the electric car large-die casting industry.

This time, the clamping force of Xiaomi's die-casting machine reached 9,100 tons. Lei Jun said: "It's just a bit larger than the 9,000 tons that Tesla just launched in the United States."

In order to implement the 9100-ton super large die-casting technology, Xiaomi started from three aspects.

The first is the die-casting island. The entire set of die-casting islands built by Xiaomi weighs 1,050 tons and covers an area of 840m², which is equivalent to two basketball courts. In addition to the "9,100-ton large die-casting" used for technology exploration and innovation, Xiaomi has also prepared traditional stamping methods, which can make more breakthroughs while maintaining low production capacity.

Next is the material. Xiaomi and the National Key Laboratory of Materials jointly used an AI simulation system to screen the raw materials and composition ratios of two Titan alloys among 10.16 million formulas, and successfully developed Xiaomi Titan alloy through 1,550 experiments.

Finally, there is the "three-section rear floor" design. Xiaomi split the 72-in-1 die-casting solution into three parts for assembly. A crumple zone for medium and low-speed collisions is set up at the rear, which to a certain extent solves the high maintenance cost of one-piece die-casting. The problem.

Change yourself and subvert the industry

The day before the release of SU7, Xiaomi launched a new logo for ThePaper OS, with a dot matrix rotating in the center to express the design concept of "Galaxy Burst".

Each super ellipse is the thoughts of people dotted in the universe. We want to use it to pay tribute to the surge of the universe and the rush of people's hearts.

Xiaomi has always been an ecological company, and the slogan "Technology without Borders" is quite confident. Looking back at the turmoil in the digital world over the past ten years, the development context of Xiaomi's ecosystem is very clear.

In the summer of 2013, after the successful launch of Redmi and the popularity of pre-sales, Xiaomi formed a preliminary ecological chain concept. Lei Jun proposed at that time that ecological chain companies must start from mobile phone peripherals. The first thing he thought of was mobile power supplies.

At the end of the year, Xiaomi's mobile power bank was launched. With a capacity of 1000mAh, a one-piece aluminum alloy casing, a simple design and a price of 69 yuan, it changed the competitive landscape of the domestic mobile power industry.

The success of the mobile power supply verified Lei Jun's vision of ecology, and Xiaomi also officially opened the curtain on "ecology". In the days that followed, it expanded the concept of "borderless" from hardware to software.

From the dual-engine core strategy of "Mobile Phone "Full ecology". At this point, Xiaomi has become the first company in the world to realize the ecological closed loop of "people and cars home".

From this point of view, Xiaomi is far away from Apple, which is in a "difficult childbirth" situation.

Smart electric vehicles combine the two major industries of automobiles and consumer electronics. If you look at Xiaomi SU7 from this perspective, you will understand that its essence is Xiaomi ecology. People's expectations for Xiaomi SU7 are precisely the expectations for automotive products to put aside single hot models and product line scale and focus on scene-based functions.

In addition to the multi-category ecology, Xiaomi, which has spanned from digital to automobiles, has also formed a dimensionality reduction attack in marketing.

Not long ago, I met He Xiaopeng at a party and talked about the hardships of building a car. I said that after three years of building the car, I really feel that it is not easy. It is at least ten times harder than I originally thought. As a peer, I admire BYD, Wei Xiaoli and Huawei's automotive business even more.

On the eve of Xiaomi SU7’s debut, Lei Jun lamented the hardships of building a car on Weibo. He also attached several pictures to “pay tribute” to BYD, Wei Xiaoli and Huawei in turn, stirring up waves——

In the warm-up of past car launches, nothing like this has ever happened.

Even Geely Vice President Yang Xueliang, who often speaks out on Weibo and has a strong Internet sense, cannot understand this. Some people say that judging from the announcements made by the automobile industry, Lei Jun's "tribute" is somewhat adventurous, but for the mobile phone industry, "Where does this go?"

The automobile used to be an extremely traditional industry, with strict hierarchies and divisions of labor between OEMs and suppliers, and the marketing style has always been prudent and conservative. Mobile phone manufacturers have an endless supply of "tricks", such as executives shouting from a distance, press conferences to seduce friends, and taking "fake spy photos" on the street, resulting in continuous involution in marketing.

Nowadays, with the advent of intelligent cars, the marketing style of the automobile industry is also changing. A public relations officer from a car company recently proposed to the Automotive Council:

When will I write an in-depth article, the title will be "The mental state of car company people, is it okay?" 》

Under the bolder and more aggressive marketing strategies, the "car people" in the public relations and marketing departments are also under constant pressure, and the workload has doubled. At the same time, Li Xiang, the "King of Weibo," also led a group of car company executives to join Weibo, actively creating topics and starting a public opinion war.

This is exactly what Xiaomi is good at.

Don’t forget, Lei Jun ten years ago is Li Xiang now.

Facing the return of the older generation of "Kings of Weibo", some people choose to welcome it with a smile, such as NIO CEO Li Bin:

Thank you Mr. Lei for your continued encouragement! Warm congratulations! Power up together to bring better smart electric vehicle products to users!

There are also people who show disdain, such as Geely Yang Xueliang mentioned above:

If a person always thinks about being paid tribute to, it will be over, but if a person always thinks about paying tribute to others, there will be no future.

Meizu even announced on Weibo that it would become the first owner of Xiaomi SU7.

▲ Meizu also held a live broadcast to watch Xiaomi’s press conference live

I still know how to play in the digital world.

Integrate technology and ecology into cars

At the beginning of the press conference, Lei Jun emphasized:

Xiaomi SU7 is positioned as a "C-class high-performance ecological technology sedan" and is a dream car that can carry all the dreams that everyone yearns for.

How to carry it? It relies on "technology" and "ecology", which is what Xiaomi calls "a complete ecology for people, cars and homes". In Xiaomi's eyes, this is a positive circulation system. Equipment and people are interdependent and continue to grow.

The ecology provides intelligent services to people, and people bring intelligence to the ecology, making the ecology smarter.

With the Xiaomi HyperConnect cross-terminal interconnection framework, it has opened up more than 200 categories including Xiaomi cars, covering more than 95% of users' life scenarios.

What’s even more surprising is that Xiaomi has even considered the “ecological experience” of Apple users, supporting wireless CarPlay, AirPlay, and even supporting iPad mounting.

When Xiaomi SU7 was unveiled, Lei Jun also brought Xiaomi 14 Pro and Xiaomi Watch S3, both in olive green, to strengthen the concept of ecology through the theme color + product matrix strategy.

It has to be said that Xiaomi understands colors. Olive green looks so appropriate on cars, mobile phones, or watches. Xiaomi understands the market. When new cars are unveiled, they launch customized color products that echo them to enhance Brand identity and consistency.

On the other hand, building a car is like growing olives. As the saying goes, "There are three peaches, four plums, and seven olives." Compared with other crops, growing olive trees requires more patience.

But as long as we insist on maintenance and scientific management, the fruiting period of olive trees can last for decades or even hundreds of years, and the same goes for Xiaomi cars.

Through 15 to 20 years of hard work, we will become one of the top five automobile manufacturers in the world and strive for the overall rise of China's automobile industry.

Lei Jun on the stage looked confident.
