WatchOS 7 has so many treasure dials, where does the inspiration come from?

Every time the watchOS of the Apple Watch is updated, as a user, the most interesting thing is to see which new watch faces have been launched.

So when watchOS 7 went online, I tried all the new dials for the first time: artist, timing, chronograph professional, GMT, simulacrum, font typography, both beautiful and practical.

It also made me curious. These dials seem to be familiar. Where did Apple's inspiration for making dials come from?

Before telling the story of the dial, we must first talk about the basic composition of a traditional watch, which is divided into several parts: strap (Bands), lugs (Lugs), crown (Crown), face (Face), bezel (Bezel) , Hands and Markers.

These parts constitute the basic elements of a watch. The higher-end watch components are more numerous, but no matter how complicated it is, they cannot be separated from the above framework.

Apple Watch is based on this, constantly changing styles to meet the appearance pursuit of smart watches by different people.

The story starts with several new watch faces added to watchOS 7.

Chronograph Professional

This name is very awkward, in fact, it can be divided into two parts, Chronograph + Professional. Although it is a newly added dial, the chronograph has long existed in the dial options list of Apple Watch. The new professional version, A tachymeter function has been added, and the surface style has also been changed.

The world’s first chronograph was invented and produced by French watchmaker Louis Moinet in 1815. It was used to observe events accurate to the second, but there was no Olympic Games at that time. This can accurately calculate the passage of time. In what scenarios can your device be used?

The answer is horse racing, so the chronograph can also be called a chronograph.

At that time, European aristocrats, like Kogoro Mori, were extremely enthusiastic about horse racing. Although the appearance of chronographs did not help much to enhance the viewing of the event, they introduced the concept of data quantification and let later generations Other sports share the convenience brought by the chronograph.

Later generations continued to improve on the basis of this chronograph, including Breitling introduced the first chronograph that could calculate the time of multiple participants at the same time; Longines introduced the first wrist chronograph movement.

What's interesting is that, whether it is a digital watch, a mechanical watch or a quartz watch, there are products with chronograph functions. Among them, the cheapest digital watch has the most accurate timing effect.

The Apple Watch with the professional chronograph dial is one of them.

But before talking about the professional chronograph dial, let’s take a look at the chronograph dial. At first glance, how come there are three dials?

The outer circle shows the normal Beijing time (of course according to my time zone), what are the two small circles?

For the convenience of explanation, I first call the largest outer bezel A ring, the ring located on the middle axis is called B ring, and the lower one is called C ring. Since it is a chronograph, its ultimate purpose is to use it for timing. Press the upper right The stopwatch icon on the corner starts timing, the thinnest hand of circle A starts to rotate, and its function is to count the seconds. The hand of circle B moves slowly, and the scale unit is minutes. You can view the length of time from a more macroscopic perspective. Circle C displays the current real time in seconds, which is used in conjunction with the hour and minute hands of Circle A.

In the dial settings, you can select the scale mark method of the A circle, which is divided into 60, 30, 6 and 3 seconds, corresponding to different timing scenes.

The 60-second second hand runs a lap, which is suitable for use in middle and long-distance running scenarios, while the 6-second lap is more suitable for inter-group activities, such as sprint running, poppy jumping, etc.

I think it is also very suitable for plank support. The faster the second hand runs in circles, people will have an illusion that time passes faster, and they will unconsciously last the time that they could not reach.

The innovation of the chronograph profession lies in the addition of the tachymeter function.

After entering the tachymeter panel, single-click to enable this function. After pressing the green button, the red pointer starts to rotate, and the reading on it keeps shrinking. The suffix "unit/hour" is the soul of the tachymeter.

The function of the tachymeter is to divide an hour into 3600 equal parts (that is, 3600 seconds), and calculate the number of times the activity can be repeated in an hour based on the time used by a single activity.

An analogy: I ran a kilometer for 6 minutes, and the reading above showed 10 units/hour, which means that I can run 10 kilometers per hour as long as I maintain this pace.

According to this method, the efficiency of activities such as typing, making dumplings, and batch editing can also be calculated.

For example, if I can make a dumpling in 10 seconds, the efficiency of making dumplings is 360 per hour.

The hour sign on the bezel seems very complicated, but in fact the focus is on the reading and the central time.

When we understand the role of each area, this dial can replace a timing app.

GMT dial (Greenwich dial)

In 1903, the Wright brothers invented the airplane. This transportation tool quickly became one of the most important inventions of the last century. In the past, it often took several days to go from one city to another, but after the birth of the plane, the time spent on the journey was reduced to a few hours.

The evolution of travel modes has made it no longer difficult to do business in the world. More and more business people choose this fast and convenient travel mode, but it is often easy to dazzle people when crossing many time zones in a short period of time.

So the GMT watch came into being. The more well-known among them is the Rolex GMT Master series, which can display the time in two time zones.

▲ The picture shows Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT MasterII

When you are on a business trip, you can find out the time of both places at a glance.

The GMT dial of Apple Watch obviously borrows the design style of Rolex GMT Master.

There are two bezels on the surface. The inner circle shows the time in the current region. Tap the screen to enter the second time zone selection interface. Rotate the crown to select cities in different time zones.

When I clicked on New York City, the outer circle shows the time in the second time zone, the red pointer points to the hour, and the long minute hand shows the two minutes together. The red part of the outer circle means day time, and blue means night time.

So as shown in the figure, the current time in my area is 9:09 in the evening, and it is 8:09 in the morning in New York. The orange numbers refer to the date.

In the middle of the second time zone area name, in the Chinese system language, it can only display a two-character city name. If it is changed to Mexico City, only its English abbreviation MC (Mexico City) can be displayed.

Positive chronograph

Like the previous chronograph, the positive chronograph dial is also a dial used for timing, but its usage is much simpler and quite intuitive.

Its prototype is probably the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms series. The latter was officially launched in 1953 as the first modern diving watch. By rotating the scale bezel, it realizes counting from 0 on a traditional watch in minutes. .

Apple Watch certainly borrowed this concept.

Tap the dial, the red inverted triangle mark will automatically move to the minute hand. After pressing "Start", the triangle mark will still stay at the position of the minute hand just now. At this time, you can quickly judge the elapsed time by observing the movement of the minute hand. , The unit is minutes.

Thanks to the attributes of its own digital watch, the Apple Watch can also display a more granular time in the center, with an accuracy of milliseconds.

Artist dial

This is the last watchOS 7 new dial described in this issue. Unlike the first three dials, this dial has a very simple function and can only display the current time.

However, this dial pays more attention to delivering beauty to users.

Minimalist color cuts and pastes are combined into one portrait after another. The eyes of the face are replaced by digital time. The user can only observe the emotions of this expression through the lips.

Every time you click on the screen, the portrait on the dial will be automatically transformed by the algorithm, showing millions of combinations.

Geoff McFetridge, as the designer of this set of dials, his resume can be described as extremely exciting.

In fact, this joint name of the dial is already the second collaboration between Apple and McFetridge. The previous WWDC2017 poster was also from him.

He also completed the interface design of the artificial intelligence system in the movie "Her", which is the OS interface that Scarlett dubbed. In that movie, he did not follow the graffiti stylized language he was good at, but created a light and futuristic interface for the audience, which also shows that his artistic attainments are not limited to a certain fixed In the field.

However, in the second cooperation with Apple, McFetridge still chose his graffiti painting style, with the new woven single-loop strap, the style is more distinctive.

summary

If you follow the evolution of the Apple Watch dial, you will find that Apple now has a more mature formula for how to design the Apple Watch dial, which can easily achieve both practicality and appearance.

Whether it is an official dial or a special dial for a third-party app, it highlights the importance of the word "practical" more than ever.

There are many elements, but not messy.

The dial information is rich enough that I can see all the information I need on the dial: watch battery, fitness record, heart rate, weather/temperature, countdown, ambient volume, etc., and you can see it when you lift your wrist.

So in recent years, I can clearly feel that my frequency of using the app in Apple Watch has become lower and lower, which has nothing to do with the changes in the positioning of Apple Watch itself.

After I wrote this article, let’s tell you, I started looking forward to the watchOS 8 watch face again.
