The ultimate choice for the Humane Party? Sony 35mm F1.4 GM officially released

Unlike the past, Sony's full-frame mirrorless camera is already the mainstream choice. With the opening of the FE system lens mount, the sub-factory lens group continues to add. Nowadays, the α7 and α9 series are definitely the most abundant mirrorless systems in the lens group, excluding the conversion. Few people criticize Sony’s mirrorless lenses. The group is not rich, we Lao Suo has never fought such a rich battle!

Since Sony released the first generation α7 in 2013, it has been 7 years since the FE mount came out. In the initial stage, Sony cooperated with Zeiss to launch a series of "popular" Sony Zeiss prime lens ZA series for the FE mount, which was the high-end series at that time. A few years later, with Sony's accumulation in optics, the GM (Master G) series was launched to replace the high-end name of the ZA series.

In the initial stage, the GM series was just complementing the focal length of the FE system, and successively introduced 2470GM, 85GM, 720GM, 100GM and so on. In recent years, the α7 series micro-single has continued to be strong in the market, and the GM series has gradually replaced the previous ZA series. Sony’s new FE 35mm F1.4 GM fixed focus lens (hereinafter referred to as 35GM) is used to replace the old 35mm F1.4 ZA lens.

From the appearance point of view, 35GM does not compromise the volume for excellent picture quality. It is similar to the FE 24mm F1.4 GM. It adopts a small and compact design. The volume is similar to 24GM. The lens length is only 96mm. The weight is controlled at 524g. For comparison, the previous Sony Zeiss 35mm F1.4 ZA has a length of 112mm and a weight of 630g. The new 35GM lens is more compatible with the α7 (α9) mirrorless body, and the mirrorless lens is "micro" again.

In terms of appearance details, the Sony 35GM is exactly the same as the 24GM, equipped with a physical aperture ring, custom buttons, AF/MF switch keys, and an infinite aperture click switch (CLICK ON/OFF) added for video shooting. The overall design style is also the same. Putting these two lenses together, it means "I am a male and female".

The key parameters of Sony FE 35mm F1.4 GM are:

  • Dimensions: 76mm x 96mm
  • Weight: 524g
  • Filter size: 67mm
  • Aperture range: F1.4~F16
  • Closest focusing distance: 0.27m
  • Optical structure: 14 elements in 10 groups (1 ED, 2 XA)
  • Price: 11,300 yuan

The main focus of Sony GM series lenses is soft focus and excellent resolution. In order to create a soft blur effect, Sony equipped the GM series lens with 11 aperture blades and added XA (super aspherical) lenses inside. The Sony 35GM is no exception. There are two XA lenses inside and one ED ( Low dispersion) lens to enhance the image quality.

Unlike the previous DDSSM (Direct Drive Ultrasonic Motor) equipped with 24GM and 100GM, Sony 35GM is equipped with the same XD linear motor as 135GM, but the number is reduced to two, but it does not affect the focus response speed. After all, 135GM has a quality of 950g , The inner optical lens is bigger and heavier.

In addition to the appearance of the infinite aperture click switch (CLICK ON/OFF), the Sony 35GM also supports linear response manual focus, these two features can bring silent aperture switching to video shooting and provide more precise and intuitive manual Focus.

In other features, the Sony 35GM is similar to other high-end lenses. The lens body is dust-proof and moisture-proof, which can cope with certain harsh environments.

In terms of price, the Sony 35GM is priced at US$1,398 in the United States and the Bank of China is priced at 11,300 yuan. The pricing is similar to that of other GM series fixed-focus lenses and is considered normal. For comparison, when the previous FE 35mm F1.4 ZA was released, it was priced at $1,600. In comparison, the price of 35GM is a bit conscientious.

After the official announcement of Sony 35GM, many foreign media test articles have been published. Judging from the samples they actually tested, 35GM is not a "flawless" lens, and is somewhat similar to 24GM in terms of dispersion performance, in scenes with high light ratios (such as reflective metal edges, leaves and other extreme environments) , 35GM still has visible dispersion (purple fringing). However, the purple fringing in the photo is relatively easy to eliminate in the later stage, and the problem is not big.

From the MTF table provided by Sony, it can be seen that the resolution of the 35GM lens maintains the consistently high level of the Sony GM fixed focus lens.

Counting 35GM, Sony now has 12 GM lenses, while the number of original FE lens groups has reached 59. There are 4 options for 35mm Sony alone. If you count all the sub-factories that support autofocus, there are as many as 12. For Sony micro-single players, choosing a 35mm lens that suits them should be a "sweet trouble" Up.

Many photographers will choose the 35mm and 50mm fixed focal length lenses for daily hanging heads. The focal lengths of 35mm and 50mm are relatively easy to grasp, and no matter which system, these two focal length lenses often have many choices. For professional photographers, 35mm and 50mm fixed focal lengths with large apertures are indispensable. Therefore, factories will frequently use 35mm and 50mm lenses to highlight their technical strength and seize professional users.

The small and compact size of 24GM is very suitable for the current micro-single, the whole system will not feel top-heavy, the center of gravity is moderate, and the good picture quality has become a hang-up head for many players. The 35GM continues this design, with the addition of the 35mm "magic oil" focal length, I believe that the frequency of this new lens will never be low.

So, the next G master should be 50mm, right?
