Starting from 435,000 yuan, Tesla Cybertruck is finally delivered. Has everything Musk originally said come true?

Four years ago, Musk shocked the world with a hammer, a steel ball, and a strange-looking pickup truck.

At that time, he turned his back to the broken car window and said with a smile that the car would be able to meet everyone "later in 2021."

As a result, the wait is 4 years.

People said it couldn't be done, that it would never be made, and yet here it is.

Musk said this while standing on the Cybertruck cargo box. In his opinion, Cybertruck is Tesla’s best product so far. “It is a better pickup truck than a pickup truck and a better sports car than a sports car.”

After four years of separation, should…?

The Cybertruck that is officially mass-produced today is not exactly the same as the one released 4 years ago, and its selling price has also changed:

The price of the entry-level rear-drive single-motor model has increased from US$39,900 to US$49,890 (approximately RMB 356,000), and the price of the dual-motor four-wheel drive model has increased from US$49,900 to US$68,890 (approximately RMB 491,600). , the most powerful three-motor model starts from  The price rose from US$69,900 to US$96,390 (approximately RMB 687,800).

Although the price is much higher than before, it is still reasonable compared to the starting price of Ford F-150 Lightning of US$49,995 (approximately RMB 356,200).

Let’s look at the specific parameters.

Due to the weight of the vehicle, the cruising range of the rear-wheel drive version of the Cybertruck is much shorter than that of other Tesla models, with an estimated cruising range of only 402 kilometers. However, it can still accelerate from 0 to 100 mph in 6.7 seconds and has a maximum speed limit. At 180km/h, the maximum towing capacity is 3.4 tons.

In addition, Tesla did not disclose other specifications of the rear-wheel drive model, which will not be officially launched until 2025.

The cruising range of the dual-motor model has increased instead of falling. The estimated cruising range is 547 kilometers. Tesla has also prepared a "mileage expansion package" (actually a battery placed in the cargo box) that can increase the cruising range. to 755 kilometers. In terms of power, the acceleration time from 100 kilometers to 100 kilometers has been increased to 4.1 seconds, but the top speed is still 180km/h, and the towing capacity is close to 5 tons (the average weight of an African elephant).

Next is the Cyberbeast beast version equipped with three motors. Tesla also brought this power system to the venue. According to on-site reports, the two motors located on the rear axle can output a total of 845 horsepower and have a similar structure to the Model S Plaid. The front motor can provide an additional 300 horsepower, for a total of 1,145 horsepower front and rear.

Based on the powerful power system, the Cyberbeast beast version can accelerate to 100 kilometers in only 2.7 seconds and has a top speed of 209km/h. But on the other hand, its cruising range is lower than that of the dual-motor version, which is 515 kilometers. After using the "mileage expansion package", it reaches 705 kilometers.

Musk also played a video at the press conference – a Beast Edition model outperformed a 911 in straight line acceleration while towing a Porsche 911 .

Porsche was not the only competitor that was "beaten" at the press conference. In a round of "towing capacity competition", Cybertruck not only beat the Rivian R1T and Ford F-150 Lightning, both electric pickup trucks, but also outperformed A diesel-burning Ford F-350.

Not only that, Tesla also said that the Cybertruck can drive on "the surface of any planet."

Tesla has brought an electronic adaptive air suspension with a movement range of 305 mm to the Cybertruck. The ground clearance can reach up to 432 mm. With a cargo box of about 1.8 meters * 1.2 meters, the main purpose is to go with one hand.

There is a fairly neat storage space at the bottom of the Cybertruck's cargo box. It is also the only Tesla model with an electric front trunk. The vehicle's cargo space reaches 1897 liters and the maximum load is 1134 kilogram.

In addition, its cockpit and cargo box are equipped with 120V and 240V sockets, which can charge power tools or other electric vehicles. During power outages, it can also directly provide households with up to 11.5 kilowatts of electricity, enough to maintain lighting systems.

Tesla even prepared roof searchlights and a rear tent, but of course, these require additional purchase.

I won’t go into details about the interior. The layout is similar to other Tesla models. See the picture.

In order to show the sturdiness of the Cybertruck body, Musk also brought videos of the previous "shooting test" and "bow and arrow test".

If Al Capone showed up with a submachine gun and dumped the entire magazine on the car door, you would still be alive.

Tesla said that the Cybertruck has a hard 30X cold-rolled stainless steel exoskeleton, and its armored glass can also withstand the impact of a baseball or level 4 hail at a speed of 112km/h. Musk also brought in Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla's chief designer who threw a steel ball at the Cybertruck four years ago, to demonstrate, and the glass was intact.

However, this time he replaced the steel ball with a baseball.

In addition, because the Cybertruck's body is too large, with a total length of 5682.9 mm, Tesla prepared rear-wheel steering for it, giving it a smaller turning radius than the Model S. At the same time, Cybertruck is also equipped with wire-controlled steering for the first time, allowing Yoke to  The steering wheel becomes really useful.

Difficult to make and difficult to sell

Obviously, the Cybertruck delivered by Tesla today is no longer the same Cybertruck 4 years ago. In order to reduce costs and successfully mass-produce, Musk has made many compromises, such as the huge wiper on the front gear and the outer rear panels on both sides. glass.

The question is, how many people will pay for the Cybertruck that he spent so much effort to build?

First of all, Americans like pickup trucks, but they prefer fuel pickup trucks.

In 2022, a total of 2.73 million pickup trucks were sold in the U.S. market, accounting for 55% of global pickup sales. Among them, the three best-selling cars are: Ford F-Series, Chevrolet Silverado, and GM's RAM P/U. The combined sales volume of the three vehicles exceeds 1.6 million units.

Pickup trucks are vehicles with strong tool attributes. Although fuel pickup trucks do not have strong acceleration performance, their convenience of recharging energy in the countryside is far ahead of pure electric pickup trucks. The reason is that the charging network in the United States is not complete enough.

Recently, more than 3,000 car dealers across the United States jointly sent a letter to the U.S. government requesting to slow down the promotion of electric vehicles.

The joint letter stated that electric vehicles will be an ideal choice for many people and their appeal will continue to grow. But the reality is that "regulations have prompted a large influx of electric vehicles into stores, but market demand cannot keep up, and pure electric vehicles have piled up in North American distribution stores."

Dealers said that most consumers are not optimistic about the electric vehicles on the market, thinking that they are not only expensive, but also have problems with cruising range and convenience of recharging energy.

Rivian R1T

Even if you put aside fuel vehicles and only look at the pure electric field, Cybertruck has two opponents that cannot be ignored-Rivian R1T and Ford F150-Lightning.

Ford F150-Lightning

Rivian, a new car company headquartered in California, is different from Musk's futurism. They believe that pickup truck users will not pay purely because of their appearance, but because the practical attributes of pickup trucks are difficult to change.

Sandy Munro, founder and CEO of Munro & Associates, an American engineering consulting company, also came to today's conference. He previously expressed his views on these three models. He said there are enough differences between the Cybertruck, F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T.

The Lightning is more of a work truck, the Rivian is good for serious off-roading, and the Cybertruck is best suited for camping and light outdoor activities.

Ford CEO Jim Farley also said: "The Cybertruck is designed for 'Silicon Valley people,' while Ford's pickup trucks are for 'real work.'"

While the outside world is badmouthing Cybertruck sales, Musk himself is also worried about production capacity.

At this year's shareholder meeting, Musk gave his delivery expectations for the Cybertruck – based on the existing orders of more than 2 million, the model's annual sales target is set at 250,000 vehicles.

Compared with Model Y, which may exceed one million sales this year, and Tesla's second-generation platform model, whose annual sales are expected to reach 5 million, Cybertruck's 250,000 units can be said to be quite restrained.

But Musk still believes that the Cybertruck will completely change the category of pure electric pickup trucks. This pure electric pickup truck, which has been delayed for four years, will become the Hummer of today's era.

It's not as grandstanding as I am, and it's actually very useful.
