Recently, we experienced another very interesting TV. It is "straight or bendable", and you can control it as you like.

It is Skyworth's latest W82, its first OLED anamorphic TV. It is worth noting that it is not a laboratory model, but a real mass-produced TV. The price is 29,999 yuan "only".

How many points can you score with this appearance?

Before the transformation, the appearance of Skyworth W82 was relatively simple. The 65-inch OLED screen on the front uses a fully-fitted process, which extends directly to the metal frame on the side, giving the illusion of no frame.

The TV is connected to the tempered glass base through a column. This column is located behind the screen, and there is not much visual interference from the front, and the screen appears to be floating.

On the side, it is not as thin as a common OLED TV. A split design is adopted at the back, and the screen body and the "small school bag" are separated.

This "small school bag" integrates audio, chips, sockets and other components or functions, and it will not be deformed. The deformation of the screen will not affect it, causing it to shift. Therefore, users can rest assured to hang the TV on the wall.

The rear shell of the screen uses a fish-scale skeleton. I counted, there were 34 pieces exposed outside, 17 pieces on each side. The frame is very smooth, without holes and screws, it still looks very delicate.

1. How to "Bend" the TV?

First of all, it needs to be clear, you can't break it by hand. When you experience it in an offline store, don't be reckless.

There are two ways to make it bend. One is to find the "distortion screen" in the settings page. Use the arrow keys on the remote control to adjust the flat curve value of the screen.

Press the down button to bend it. Each time you press it, the curvature will increase by 10%. That is to say, it needs to be pressed 10 times to make it reach the most curved state, and the curvature will reach 1000R at this time.

In the process of turning it into a bend, you cannot tap the remote control continuously, otherwise a reminder of "current operation too frequent" will appear. After pressing it once, you need to wait for it to deform, and then press it again.

To return it to a flat state, you can press the up button on the remote control. Each time you press it, it returns to 10%. If it is troublesome, you can directly press the "OK" button to reset with one button.

Another way to adjust the curvature is relatively simple. Press the deformation button of the remote control, and three adjustment methods will appear on the screen: professional gaming, private viewing and custom.

Professional e-sports corresponds to 1500R curvature, private viewing corresponds to 2000R curvature, and customization will jump to the specific adjustment page. Click the first two options, the screen will automatically bend to the corresponding curvature.

In fact, the official website also provides a method, which is voice control. But in the actual experience, the voice function is not easy to use, and the TV cannot understand the operation I want. Perhaps this function needs to be implemented by subsequent OTA upgrades.

2. How does it work?

The key to the Skyworth W82's bending is its electric bending mechanism, which can drive the flexible screen to make a straight or bend motion.

Looking through the information on the official website, we can know that this mechanism uses austenitic stainless steel to ensure good corrosion resistance, temperature resistance and bending performance. The motor is a high-speed brushless Hall motor, which has the advantages of accurate positioning, stable operation and low noise.

The reason why the rear shell of the screen uses a fish-scale splicing structure is to enhance rigidity and reduce noise and abnormal noise.

It can be found by naked eye observation that when the screen is bent, the gap between the frame of the back shell will be enlarged. When reset, it will shrink to a tightly fitted state. There was no strange noise during the whole process, and the running noise was almost invisible.

3. What is the speed at which the screen turns?

4. Will the screen be bumpy?

Because the TV uses flexible glass, in a straight state, the TV screen is not 100% flat, but slightly undulating.

Of course, this can only be discovered by walking around and watching when the screen is black. When the screen is bright, there is no such problem, and the look and feel is basically the same as that of a normal OLED TV.

In the curved state, the curve of the screen is also quite smooth, without the bumpy feel as expected. The curvature of the panel is uniform from the center to the sides.

5. Will there be strange glare on the screen?

Obviously, non-planar glass will have more obvious glare. Especially in some dim pictures, the glare problem will be more perceptible. But if the tones of the film are relatively bright, the glare will be relatively less conspicuous under the suppression of the high-brightness OLED panel.

There are many spotlights in our room, and there are glass doors on both sides. It can be seen that the glare at some angles is quite obvious. If you want a more immersive, non-disturbing movie-watching experience, you still have to turn off the lights and close the curtains.

6. What is the meaning of "be straight or bendable"?

In the past, whether we bought curved computer monitors or curved TVs, the main purpose was to get a more immersive look and feel. This is because the curved screen can create a feeling of large depth of field and present a stronger three-dimensional feeling.

Especially for friends who like to play first-person perspective games, the curved screen can get a more enjoyable gaming experience. This feeling of the intersection of reality and virtuality is really addictive.

In addition, W82 comes standard with HDMI 2.1 interface, supports 4K/120Hz, VRR variable refresh rate. Therefore, it can be perfectly compatible with PS5 and other next-generation game consoles, and it is a real game weapon.

But curved screens are not all advantages. For example, when facing multiple audiences, only the one in the middle can get the best movie-watching experience, and the others have no choice but to do it.

In actual experience, Skyworth W82 is quite good at restoring tones. The peak brightness can reach 1000nits, and the relationship between the brightness and darkness of the picture is particularly brilliant on this 4K HDR panel.

In terms of super-score algorithm, Skyworth W82 is also quite mature. When I play the 1080P video source on streaming media, I have been able to optimize it to a standard close to 4K.

In general, Skyworth W82 is definitely regarded as a "black technology" product in the TV industry. But the high price of 29,999 yuan also means that it will not be a mass model, more like a window to show off its own products.

In fact, when it comes to product power, software ecology is also a major part of it. In terms of the logic of interaction, the Coocaa system equipped with Skyworth W82 still has room for great improvement, but the current feeling is that it is not very easy to use.

But there is one thing I was more surprised. That is, its system UI is very beautiful, refreshing, and the layout is neat and comfortable. This also unintentionally gives W82 a more youthful temperament.

In the process of experiencing this W82, I still have a little feeling, that is, its 16:9 screen is still less visually shocking. If it is a 21:9 fish screen, it may give people a stronger sense of surround and immersion in a curved state.

Of course, we can also imagine that future TVs can be not only bendable or straight, but the sides can also be automatically scaled to adjust the ratio, just like the OPPO X 2021 reel screen concept machine. Switch to a 16:9 ratio when watching TV shows, and stretch to a 21:9 ratio when playing games or watching movies.

With pioneers like W82, perhaps the "flexible and stretchable" TV is not far away from us.
