Samsung mini-LED 8K TV QN900A experience: What is the “money capability”? This is

Although Guangzhou's housing prices are relatively low in the first-tier cities. However, the prices of houses with labels such as "subway entrance", "provincial school district", and "near commercial district" still make me and other workers unattainable.

The color TV market has a similar situation. As long as there are next-generation keywords such as "8K" and "mini-LED" on the label, the price is bound to be high.

And the Samsung Neo QLED 8K TV QN900A we experienced this time can be described as a collection of many luxury labels: 8K, mini-LED, 85 inches, ultra-thin design and so on. The price is also luxurious, the Bank of China sells for 99,999 yuan.

As a masterpiece of Samsung's TV product line in 2021, the design of QN900A is quite flagship. The almost borderless screen and the minimalist line design are called "Infinity One Design" by Samsung.

This design language may be translated as "return to basics", that is, based on the principle of "do not disturb", to minimize the visual interference caused by the design. The 0.8mm slim black frame and no Samsung logo on the front make the viewing experience more immersive.

The minimalist style also allows QN900A to get rid of the bulkiness brought by the large size. From the side, the thickness of the fuselage is only 15.4mm, with no arcs or protrusions, and the lines are tough and smooth.

There are three more details about its appearance:

  • The TV can be wall mounted. Its unique Slim wall-mounted design allows the distance between the TV and the wall to be controlled at 7.5mm, achieving the effect of "mural".
  • Eight speakers can be seen on the back of the TV. The grille around the frame is also the sound hole of the speaker.
  • The TV uses integrated cables to solve the problem of complicated wires. The thin and light smart junction box can be connected and stored on the back of the TV.

It can be said that QN900A's thin and light technological aesthetics allows this big guy to survive elegantly in a room with any decoration style, as if it was born as a part of the room.

Ingenious screen, shine

As mentioned at the beginning of the article, the two key features of Samsung QN900A are 8K and mini-LED.

8K is not a new concept anymore. The resolution is up to 7680 x 4320, which is 4 times that of 4K. In contrast, mini-LED is still a bit strange to the public.

Although mini-LED is essentially LCD, its display effect is far better than traditional LCD panels. While comparable to the OLED display effect, the service life is better than that of OLED.

How does it combine many advantages into one? From the perspective of its technical principles, it will be easier to understand. Samsung QN900A using mini-LED backlight technology, the size of each LED lamp bead is 1/40 of Samsung's ordinary LED lamp bead.

After the lamp beads become smaller, more LED lamp beads can be laid in the same size. Not only can it solve the vignetting problem of traditional LCDs, but it also has great significance for improving the light control effect of TVs.

▲ Uniform solid color background, no vignetting

Samsung equipped this mini-LED screen with "Quantum Dot Matrix Technology Pro", which has 12bit (4096-level) light control and power distribution technology, which can excellently control the LED brightness level and achieve OLED-like ultra-high contrast .

▲ TV screen shots

Simply put, black can be deeper and white can be brighter. For example, in the picture below, the sun shines on the dye vat through the wooden shed, and the contrast between the sun and the shadow is very strong.

The Samsung QN900A's ultra-high contrast is not only due to mini-LED and quantum dot matrix technology Pro, but also inseparable from its dynamic black balance technology, Neo quantum dot 8K processor and other configurations.

The advanced black equalizer on the QN900A can automatically calculate each scene in real time, providing sharper clarity and enhancing visibility in dark scenes.

▲ Many starbursts can be observed in front of the dark cosmic background

The Neo quantum dot 8K processor will also use the depth algorithm to intelligently enhance the contrast according to each scene of the film to improve the picture quality level.

It can be seen that the eyes of the characters in the picture below are very bright, and the texture of the clothes, the texture of the hat and the details are all reproduced extremely well. At the same time, the snow-capped mountains in the background are also very transparent, and the whole picture presents a very high tolerance.

Of course, QN900A perfectly supports its own HDR 10+ specification, dynamic tone mapping can adjust color and contrast frame by frame. Q HDR 64x expands the bright area range by 1.5 times than the ordinary dynamic partition technology, which makes the contrast performance of the TV better.

In the scene below, the sun and the snow-white waves are not overexposed when they are displayed with super high brightness. The shadows of the waves and the texture of the sandy beaches also retain rich details. The scene of the sea and the sky looks real and moving.

With the blessing of many black technologies mentioned above, the visual experience brought by QN900A is quite shocking. HDR 10+ looks bright and colorful, and the picture is vivid.

However, although the HDR10+ display effect is already quite good, I still hope that "in my lifetime", I can see that Samsung can embrace Dolby Vision. After all, the latter has more film sources.

Fortunately, the video in Dolby Vision format can be decoded and played by QN900A, but it will automatically be converted to HDR effect. For non-enthusiasts, the presentation of color and dynamic range is difficult to distinguish from Dolby Vision.

Audiovisual performance, full of "money capability"

If you compare 8K resources to "precious delicacies," then the 4K and 1080P video sources that you come into contact with on a daily basis are "homemade."

Before experiencing Samsung QN900A, we found many 8K resources. But to be honest, there are few free 8K resources that can be found on the Internet, and most of them are compressed.

For ordinary users, it is certainly unrealistic to download dozens of GB of 8K resources every time they watch TV. This is a test of the TV chip's ability to optimize ordinary film sources.

The Neo quantum dot 8K processor on the QN900A has 16 neural network units, which can use deep learning algorithms to analyze video images and improve the video effect frame by frame.

So what is the effect of optimization? Whether we can not be picky eaters and eat home-cooked meals is a question we are very curious about.

We first use two severely compressed 8K videos to test. The duration of each video is about 5 minutes, but the volume is less than 1GB.

From the screen of the first video, the makeup of the girl group and the color rendering of the stage lighting are quite real and have a strong sense of atmosphere. The picture is fine enough, and you can even count the number of LED beads in front of the stage.

The second scene video also showed amazing effects. Knife marks and cracks on the wooden pillars, and small stones on the side of the road are clearly visible. The colors are fresh and not overflowing, and the contrast between cold and warm is obvious.

On the whole, the effects of these two videos are satisfactory. Even if it is severely compressed, after optimization, you can still see full details and delicate colors.

For 4K resolution video, QN900A's line-up technology can easily optimize it to a level comparable to 8K video.

For example, in the picture below, the texture of the character's cotton and linen turban, the wrinkles on the back of the hand, and even the sweat beads on the nose are clearly reproduced.

We watched a large number of 4K film sources, and at a normal viewing distance of 3-4 meters, it is basically difficult to distinguish the difference in definition from 8K film sources.

Platforms such as the domestic "You Aiteng" platform have not yet launched 8K online video, and the highest quality option is 4K. However, the highest picture quality of most online movies and TV shows still stays in the 1080P era.

We watched a number of online videos with 1080P resolution on the Youku platform. The optimized effects of these 1080P videos have one thing in common: the subject is indeed very clear, but the background will occasionally show color breaks and smears.

In the picture below, the male protagonist of "Assassinated Novelist" has a clear face and clothing. But the torch and the sky in the background show the phenomenon of color gaps.

Another example is the hair and clothing of the "red-haired ghost", but the mountains and stone statues in the background have a stronger sense of smearing.

So this 8K TV is still a bit picky. If you want to see its best display effect, it is best to find a 4K or clearer source.

The anti-reflection ability of Samsung's high-end TV has always been the industry leader, and the same is true for the QN900A. It not only uses anti-reflection technology on the surface of the screen, but also the dynamic black balance technology to eliminate screen glare. Even though the light source is complex and diverse in the scene we experience, the TV picture is always pure.

When we are talking about the movie-watching experience, sound performance is an aspect that cannot be ignored. QN900A is equipped with 80W 6.2.2 channel speakers that support Dolby sound. The actual hearing is three-dimensional and vivid, which can provide a good sense of atmosphere.

Regarding its sound quality, there are three highlights. The first is spatial adaptive sound effects, which automatically monitor the surrounding environment through sound sensors, analyze the sound reflection effects in the room, and automatically optimize the sound effects.

The second is the audio-visual tracking OTS technology, which can realize that the sound moves with the sound-producing object in the picture, and the speaker in different parts of the sound is focused on. This allows users to get a good surround listening experience and enhance the immersion of watching movies.

The third is to match the echo wall sound bar, which can form a "Q Symphony" with the TV speakers to achieve the Dolby Atmos effect.

With top-notch screen quality and excellent audio, QN900A gives people a feeling of "you can't go back when you use it". At home, you can enjoy an audio-visual experience comparable to that of a theater. Perhaps this is the manifestation of the "money capability."

A natural game master

Samsung's QLED series, thanks to the extremely low input delay and exquisite display effect, has always been well-known among game enthusiasts.

The Neo QLED series is the first in the industry to obtain the "TV Game Performance" certification from the German certification body, and the 4K 120Hz input delay is controlled within 5.8ms.

Generally speaking, if the input delay is less than 30ms, the player will basically not feel the time lag of the operation. The input delay of 5.8ms gives people the pleasure of "pointing and hitting".

After we connect the game console to the TV through the HDMI 2.1 interface, the TV and audio will automatically switch to the game mode, and then automatically turn on the Samsung-featured "Game Bar" game status bar and setting bar.

At this time, users can view and set their own game preferences. Such as surround sound, dynamic black equalizer, HDR effect and so on.

On this 85-inch mini-LED screen, the console gaming experience is outstanding. The HDR scenes in the game are reproduced in real life. For example, in the following scene, the buildings in the high light in the distance are clearly visible, and there are a lot of details in the shadows of the grass nearby.

The ultra-low input delay makes it feel very smooth and agile when playing action games. The dynamic acceleration effect allows the characters to keep clear and sharp in the picture and boundary under high-speed movement.

Unfortunately, we do not have 8K resolution game resources at hand. I believe that running the 8K version of "Death Stranding" on QN900A will bring a very shocking experience.

For PC gamers, there is another good news. Samsung cooperated with AMD to bring the function of Freesync premium pro to QN900A. Simply put, it is to make the TV more compatible, reduce latency and prevent screen tearing, while also bringing HDR high dynamic range visual effects.

As mentioned above, QN900A has audio and video tracking function, which plays an important role in the game. For example, when a character runs or shifts in the screen, the direction of the sound will change with the position of the character, and even gunshots will come from the direction of the gunner. Let the player be completely immersed in the game world.

If you are a game lover and happen to have strong financial resources, then QN900A is the perfect choice for now.

The maverick Tizen OS

As an Android TV user, I have always been curious about Samsung's Tizen OS operating system based on Linux. This time I finally had the opportunity to experience it in depth.

Tizen OS gave me the first impression that it is light and concise. The boot speed is extremely fast, almost "second boot". Its system page is very different from the common Android custom UI. You may not get used to it for the first time, but after getting familiar with it, it feels very efficient and easy to use.

In terms of localization, Tizen OS has built-in Mango TV, Uni-Ten, CIBN Sports and so on. However, apps like Bilibili, Huya E-sports, QQ Music, etc. that I often use are missing from the App Store.

In addition, I don’t know if it is due to the platform. Some movies on the Tencent platform can provide 4K resolution on Android TV, but on this Samsung TV, you can only choose the highest resolution of 1080P.

Tizen OS has a feature that impressed me a lot. It has a built-in "environmental screen" application. After opening it, you can select various wallpapers or dynamic effects to turn the TV into an art window and decorate the space.

In addition, the Bixby AI voice assistant built into the TV is very easy to use. Quick response, accurate recognition, supports 16 domestic dialects, and can be used as a life assistant.

Also worth mentioning is its remote control. Samsung launched a solar remote control for the first time, which can be charged through indoor and outdoor light or a USB interface. According to Samsung's calculations, after the product is popularized, it is estimated that 99 million AA batteries can be saved within 7 years.

QN900A, how far is it from us?

After experiencing the Samsung QN900A, its exquisite picture quality and smart sound made me sigh, "It's great to have money," and I also think about how far this type of "futuristic product" is from the "ordinary family" .

The reason why it belongs to the future is mainly because the mini-LED technology and 8K resolution that Samsung has successively launched will become the popular trend of future TVs.

So when can mini-LED enter the homes of ordinary people? In fact, it may not be too long.

As an improved solution for traditional LCD panels, mini-LED is not technically as complicated as micro-LED, and the price will gradually decrease as the process matures and production capacity increases.

For example, the 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro uses mini-LED technology. It is foreseeable that mini-LED will show a blowout development in the mobile terminal and color TV market in the next two to three years. By then, ordinary families can also afford mini-LED TVs.

But the popularity of 8K is far more difficult than mini-LED. We can refer to the development process of 4K.

Take Samsung as an example. It first launched a 4K resolution TV at the CES conference in 2013, 8 years ago. Looking at the current color TV market and streaming media content, it can be said that 4K has not yet been fully popularized today.

Therefore, we can speculate that there is still a long way to go around the ecological construction of 8K, but it must be the trend of future image development.

Whether it is Mini-LED or 8K, these seemingly "tomorrow" functions or features are often the most fascinating.

And this is the meaning of "QN900A": let people see the future. Even, enjoy the future in advance.
