The Redmi K40 series launched by Redmi at the beginning of this year officially "worked" with the "flagship doorman" badge, and the limelight was no different, and the Redmi K40 series really achieved a solid price and practicality with a starting price of 1999 yuan. My own identity welded the doors of the flagship and sub-flagship to death.
Redmi, who has tasted the sweetness, turned its attention to gaming phones. Since early April, some people have speculated that Redmi will launch gaming phones. No, the Redmi K40 game enhanced version has arrived as scheduled, with a starting price of 1999 yuan.
However, after some experience, I am still willing to call it Redmi K40 Gaming. Why don't I even want to call it a game enhanced version? Don't worry, you will understand after reading the article.
Dimensity still needs to be polished, MIUI needs to be optimized
Since it is known as the "e-sports mobile phone", let's start straight to the point, let's talk about its gaming performance first.
The first is the processor. K40 Gaming uses the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC. This is MediaTek’s flagship chip launched on January 20 this year, but so far only the Realme GT Neo has chosen to carry it, and K40 Gaming is the second.
Dimensity 1200 adopts 6nm process technology, 4 A78 cores (3.0GHz x 1 + 2.6GHz x 3) and 4 A55 small cores with main frequency 2.04GHz. The X1 core is not used. Perhaps it is due to power consumption considerations. It is Mali-G77 MC9.
According to the book data, the average score of the two runs of Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 and K40 Gaming AnTuTu is 690,000 . For comparison, the running score of moto edge s (Snapdragon 870) is 620,000 , while that of iQOO 7 (Snapdragon 888 ) is 620,000 . )'S running score is 710,000 points , which probably shows that the overall performance of the former is somewhere between the latter two.
The price of K40 Gaming is the same as that of the popular model equipped with the 870. Compared with the mainstream model of the Snapdragon 888, which is 3,000 yuan, it highlights the cost-effective advantage of the former. From the data point of view, K40 Gaming still gave me a little surprise.
It seems that Dimensity 1200 is very capable of playing, and the gap with Snapdragon 888 is not big. Can the actual performance support such expectations?
Since this is a gaming phone with a physical shoulder button, I will test the performance of the shooting game first.
In the Peace Elite, in the "Smooth + 90fps" mode, K40 Gaming's performance is quite satisfactory, the frame rate is maintained at around 80, but the fluctuations are more frequent, but with the blessing of 4D vibration and shoulder buttons, it is very helpful to enhance the gaming experience help.
In particular, K40 Gaming's "high-quality vibration" function optimized for peace elites will trigger the X-axis linear motor in a variety of scenarios, including pulling the trigger, hitting the target, and shooting nearby people. The vibration is slightly restrained and not strong enough.
The same vibration feel also appeared when I was typing, receiving messages, incoming calls, etc. By the way, the iFLYTEK input method used on K40 Gaming and Razer Custom launched two skins, one black and one white, which look like black widow spiders. The shape of the series, but under the 26-key key position, the gap between the keys is a bit small, and it is easy to make typos.
Going back to the peace elite on K40 Gaming, in addition to "smooth", in other image quality modes, the highest frame rate is only "Ultra High" optional, perhaps because of limited performance.
The performance of K40 Gaming in the Call of Duty mobile game is another scene. Under the highest "exquisite" image quality, set to "limit", and the frame rate is stable at 60fps.
K40 Gaming quickly lost the battle in front of the original god of the "running score software".
From "Maximum 30fps" to "Very Low 60fps" mode, the image quality gradually decreases, but the frame rate never reaches 60fps, but the frame rate trend is fairly stable. If there are more to-do applications in the background, the frame rate will not be so It's stable, saying that it is an enhanced version of the game is an overstatement.
K40 Gaming uses a space-grade heat dissipation material called "white graphene", hexagonal boron nitride combined with graphite materials to create a heat dissipation film with an area of 11540mm². It sounds very cool. After 20 minutes of actual play, The shooting position started to get hot, and the shell temperature was close to 40 degrees. However, due to the metal middle frame, the discomfort of heat can still be noticeably felt when holding the horizontal screen.
So, is K40 Gaming a gaming phone?
Forget it, but its advantages as a gaming phone are reflected in the shoulder buttons, 4D vibration, and stereo sound effects. In terms of image quality and frame rate performance, it still has room for improvement, which is why I don’t want to call it a game. The reason for the enhanced version, fluency is the more critical factor for me.
I hope that the subsequent optimization of GPU firmware can make its game performance stronger, and I am willing to change my opinion at that time.
The game phone that looks the least like a game phone
"People are not to look at themselves, and the sea is not to be measured", this is also very suitable for K40 Gaming.
Most gaming phones launched in the past two or three years will choose to make the appearance very cool, so that people can see the identity of their gaming phones at a glance. The addition of elements such as RGB, built-in fans, and back screens enhances the attributes of the game, but at the same time makes them no longer suitable for daily use.
The most obvious shortcoming brought by many game elements is that it makes the phone thick and heavy, with a weight of more than 220 grams, exaggeratedly speaking, putting them in the trouser pocket will affect the usual walking posture.
But K40 Gaming is like a clear stream, with a thickness of 8.3mm and a weight of 205 grams. This record should not be broken for a long time.

The biggest reason why K40 Gaming can be regarded as a gaming phone is the magnetic power shoulder button and the RGB ring lighting effect around the rear camera.
The design of the shoulder button looks ordinary. It adopts a switch design similar to that of the Black Shark. It is hidden when not in use. The height of the button is the same as the middle frame. Flip the switch next to it. The shoulder button pops out with a "click", and the pressing force is not heavy. The shoulder button does not shake when pressed down, and there is a slight beep sound when the switch is triggered. The feedback feels good.
If you can add pop-up sound effects similar to the black shark, it will be more like a gaming phone.
In addition to the shoulder button on the right side of the fuselage, there is also a fingerprint lock screen button and an antenna. The K40 series all use a side fingerprint solution.
When I experienced the K40 Pro in February, I found that the fingerprint recognition speed of the side fingerprint was too fast, and the unlocking was completed with a touch. As a result, sometimes the screen turned on when I accidentally touched the unlock button while holding the phone, and was forced to change Holding posture.
In the subsequent version of the system, the function of pressing to unlock was added. I switched to this mode as soon as possible. The trigger mechanism was changed to make K40 Gaming's side fingerprint solution better. I don’t need to be awkward anymore. The holding posture to get the phone.
Due to the addition of the shoulder button, the K40 Gaming's volume button has been moved to the left side of the fuselage, and there is also a microphone on the same side. When the phone is held horizontally to play games, it will not affect the voice reception effect.
There is an infrared transmitter and speaker opening on the top, and a JBL LOGO, because it has passed the JBL audio certification; the bottom is a dual card slot, USB Type-C interface and speaker opening.
The back of the K40 Gaming has a mecha embossed line design commonly found on gaming phones, but it is very restrained compared to competing products. Under the action of light reflection, the lines are particularly eye-catching, which complements the silver wing color of the back cover, and is exceptionally harmonious.
The rear camera uses a three-camera system, and two circular breathing lights are hidden in the upper and lower semicircles, which display different colors in the state of gaming, charging, and notification of incoming calls.
There is also a lightning special-shaped flashlight that may be inspired by Harry Potter (by mistake). It is usually quite unique, and its special-shaped design is not visible when it is lit.
In general, K40 Gaming does not follow the exaggerated appearance design of gaming phones. While not losing its gaming attributes, it is more suitable for use as a daily mobile phone. This may be a new direction for the design of gaming phones in the future.
Bucket configuration, no obvious shortcomings
After talking about the game, let’s talk about the overall hardware configuration of K40 Gaming. Some key parameters are as follows:
CPU: MediaTek Dimensity 1200;
Screen: 6.67-inch OLED screen, up to 120Hz refresh rate, three-finger 480Hz touch sampling rate;
Resolution: 2400 x 1080;
Memory: 6GB/8GB/12GB LPDDR4x;
Storage capacity: 128GB/256GB UFS 3.1;
Network: Support SA/NSA dual 5G, support Wi-Fi 6 protocol, a total of three sets of Wi-Fi antennas;
Battery: 5065mAh capacity / 67W fast charge;
Other features: full-function NFC, infrared remote control.
The front flexible straight screen further reduces the gap between the width of the chin and the forehead through the COP packaging process, and the height of the lower frame is only 2.7mm.

The fly in the ointment is that the opening of the front camera on the top has become larger, and fortunately, it does not affect the daily and gaming experience.
The screen resolution is the same as the K40 series, and it supports DCI-P3 color gamut, HDR 10+, but the maximum brightness is only 500nits, and in the 120Hz high refresh rate display mode, DC dimming cannot be turned on.
So if you have a higher pursuit of picture quality, maybe the screen on the K40 standard series will be more suitable for you.
In terms of photography, K40 Gaming uses a 64-megapixel 1/2-inch wide-angle main camera with a glass-plastic hybrid lens, that is, a combined lens with 1 glass lens and 5 resin lenses, f/1.65 aperture, but unfortunately there is no optical protection. Shake function.
The other two are an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens and a 2-megapixel macro lens.
During the day, the shooting effect is acceptable, the film formation rate is high, and the color performance is not obvious. At night, due to the lack of optical image stabilization function, the film formation rate is slightly lower. The overall look and feel of the night scene mode is good, but you will find it after zooming in. There is an algorithmic tendency to over-sharpening, and whether it looks good or not depends entirely on personal preference.

Finally, talk about battery life and sound effects.
With a body thickness of 8.3mm, K40 Gaming has a built-in battery with a capacity of 5065mAh (typical value). The battery life is remarkable. Under moderate use intensity, there is no problem from 9 am to 7 pm. The free L-shaped data cable is connected to a 67W fast charging head, and it takes 50 minutes to charge from 0 to 100%.
I connected the fast charge to K40 Gaming before get off work, and I don’t need an anxious battery when I go home at night and drive black with my friends.
This time, K40 Gaming’s sound effects are also very thorough, and the most complete in its class: JBL joint tuning, Dolby Atmos, HiRes and HiRes Wireless certification, the sound quality built is quite attractive, and it can be used when watching movies. Hear the obvious layering of the front and rear sound fields, and the bass part is also very shocking, but it is easy to break the sound after the volume is adjusted to 90%.
In my opinion, K40 Gaming is a restrained gaming phone. The overall performance is more balanced than conventional gaming phones, but this balance is achieved by lowering certain specifications, rather than the extraordinary performance we imagined.
However, it is more acceptable to treat K40 Gaming as a daily main mobile phone that enhances the gaming experience.
