Have you ever played Plague Inc.? It is a strategy game that requires its players to develop and spread deadly viruses around the world to annihilate humanity . Since its release in 2012, it has been nominated several times to compete for the best game of the year. According to the data of February this year, the game has more than 120 million global downlaods (to date they will certainly be increased). The developers also stated that there is always a considerable increase in sales in the short term when new pandemics occur.
On January 22 it became the most downloaded app ever in China, only to be incredibly withdrawn from digital stores shortly after or by the authorities .
The new The Cure mode
In March we had already anticipated that the production company Ndemic Creations had plans to develop a new game mode . The update, released just yesterday, is called Plague Inc: The Cure and reverses the objectives of the original gameplay. As stated by Ndemic Creations, the new modality is an attempt to simulate in a "realistic" way the approach needed to stop a pandemic. To make the mechanics as realistic as possible, the developers enlisted the help of medical experts.
The Cure is an interesting illustration of the current world engaged in the fight against Covid-19. In the game, in fact, we have to take care of supervising the different phases of containment of the pandemic: from the research of the disease to the use of techniques such as contact tracing to the development of a vaccine. Ndemic stresses that the game should not be taken as a scientific model, but, thanks to the contribution of experts, it can give an idea of what it means and what it is necessary to do to defeat a virus like Covid-19.
Charity and collaborations
Ndemic Creations donated large sums to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in March to help them fight the virus. The news went around the world and it was thanks to this renewed popularity that Ndemic decided to develop the new game mode, receiving the intellectual contribution from the two organizations.
CEPI CEO Richard Hatchett is pleased with The Cure . The mode appears to have successfully integrated accurate scientific notions into addicting gameplay. According to him, The Cure , "encompasses the complexities of the global response to the pandemic and highlights how necessary and crucial international collaboration is to address this threat ".
Ndemic Creations says Plague Inc: La Cure will be free "as long as COVID-19 is not under control". The new mode is already available on iOS and Android. PC and console gamers will have to wait a little while instead.
Ndemic, on the official website, has released the following description regarding the new mode:
