OnePlus 9 Pro in-depth experience: a powerful tool for street photography, but not only good at photography

The OnePlus 9 series may be the loudest generation among the previous generations of OnePlus models. From the official announcement of the cooperation with Hasselblad, to inviting Zhou Xun and Hu Ge as brand spokespersons, OnePlus has repeatedly appeared on the Weibo hot search list.

If the volume is louder, consumers will naturally raise the expectation threshold of the product. Not only in terms of images, but the comprehensive experience of screens and systems are also important indicators that are curious and affect consumer decision-making.

Although we have previously used the form of video to explore and test the results of the cooperation between OnePlus and Hasselblad. But limited by the length of time, it is difficult to cover everything, and many feelings are too late to say.

This article would like to talk to you about the surprises and regrets that OnePlus 9 Pro has brought to me in the past two weeks of experience.

A weapon for telling good stories

If the biggest highlight of the OnePlus 8 series is the good screen, then the OnePlus 9 series puts its differentiation strategy on the image.

In order to quickly establish its own differentiated advantage, Yijiajin invited Hasselblad, the one who witnessed Armstrong stepping on the surface of the moon. expensive Legendary camera brand.

In addition to the joint action, OnePlus also spent a lot of effort this time to promote their emphasis on ultra-wide angle. There are two highlights: one is the use of an IMX 766 outsole sensor, and the other is the use of a free-form surface lens.

The results are obvious, with sharp images and good colors. The use of optics to eliminate the distortion caused by the ultra-wide angle is also more reliable than the algorithm. OnePlus said that it got rid of the status of "secondary camera" for super wide-angle, and this time it really did.

However, the improvement of the super wide-angle quality does not make me feel "amazing" too much. What really hit me was the wide-angle lens with a mediocre focal length.

The main wide-angle lens of OnePlus 9 Pro has an equivalent focal length of 23mm, which is similar to that of mainstream models. In my opinion, this is a relatively awkward focal length, not as shocking as the ultra-wide angle, nor as humane as 28mm and 35mm.

For a long time in the past, I rarely used the main camera lens of my mobile phone for photography creation. Either use super wide-angle or telephoto. My stereotype is that the viewing angle of the main wide-angle lens of the mobile phone is too mediocre to tell a good story.

But in the half month of using OnePlus 9 Pro, I realized my mistakes. Whether the story is told well or not has little to do with the focal length. What really matters is the color and tone.

For the emotional communication of a photo, color often takes up a considerable proportion. Thanks to Hasselblad’s excellent color science, the OnePlus 9 Pro has excellent color calibration of the sensor this time, which has played a great role in the photographer’s self-expression.

When recording life, just choose the automatic mode. The algorithm will automatically adjust the hue, saturation, and brightness of the scene, and automatically generate a natural and rich color photo, eliminating the need to open the retouching software to set filters before posting to Moments.

But if you want to create photography and pursue accurate color reproduction or more extreme color performance, you still have to use the professional mode to let the algorithm participate in the filming process as little as possible.

▲ Color performance in professional mode of OnePlus 9 Pro

The professional mode is also the most interesting part of the OnePlus 9 Pro camera. Because telling a good story requires not only scientific color, but also the coordination of tone.

Use professional mode to take photos, and the light and dark levels of the scene are completely preserved. The charm of this tone is hard to match the algorithm optimization in automatic mode.

▲The tone performance of OnePlus 9 Pro in professional mode

Excellent color and rich tone performance, this is the confidence that OnePlus 9 Pro shouts on the poster, "There is always a story, is seen by the image", and it is also the fundamental motivation for me to take it to sweep the street.

The professional mode of the OnePlus 9 Pro camera still has a few things to do well. One is that it can shoot DNG RAW with 12bit color depth. This greatly increases the upper limit of post-processing for professional creators.

The second is that the UI interface is refreshing and simple, whether it is exposure histogram or peak focus, it also has the functions that are available on professional cameras.

The third is that UX is done very carefully, the interaction logic is simple, and it is easier to learn. In addition, when adjusting parameters such as ISO and shutter speed, the X-axis vibration motor will also have corresponding vibration feedback, as if operating a mechanical dial.

If you want to find the shortcomings, it is that the current professional mode of OnePlus 9 Pro only supports the main wide-angle lens, and the ultra-wide-angle and telephoto lenses are not yet open. It is expected that subsequent OTA upgrades can solve this problem.

Speaking of telephoto, the equivalent focal length of the telephoto lens of OnePlus 9 Pro is about 75mm and 8 million pixels. In a well-lit environment, imaging is remarkable. The addition of OIS optical image stabilization also improves the film formation rate of telephoto.

OnePlus 9 Pro also has a 2-megapixel black-and-white camera, which is suspected of making up the number. I have basically not used it in the past two weeks. I very much hope that OnePlus will vacate its position and replace it with a larger and better sensor for the telephoto lens, so that the OnePlus 9 Pro image will really be hard to pick.

"Unbiased specialty students"

Seeking differentiation is an eternal topic in business competition. We can see that there are more and more mobile phones on the market with slogans such as "Image Flagship" and "Game Flagship".

It is a good idea to make the product "small and beautiful". Regardless of game or video, there are loyal fans in its market segments.

But from the consumer's point of view, I still hope that when I own a mobile phone that has some specialties, the experience in other aspects will also be of flagship level. In other words, I prefer "non-disciplined specialty students." And OnePlus 9 Pro is a positive example.

Although the positioning of OnePlus 9 Pro is the "image flagship", it is difficult to find shortcomings in various configurations and experiences. At the same time, the weight is controlled within 200g, and it is not reduced to a "bucket machine."

The performance of Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 does not need to be repeated. What makes OnePlus 9 Pro stand out is its top-of-the-line screen:

  • 2K resolution (3216 X 1440 pixels)
  • Flexible AMOLED E4 micro curved screen
  • 120Hz LTPO adaptive refresh rate
  • Native 10 bit color depth, support HDR 10+
  • Front and rear dual light perception, support 8192 levels of brightness adjustment
  • Automatic environmental color temperature adjustment
  • Hardware level MEMC frame insertion

From the parameter point of view, this screen is very ideal, 2K and 120Hz can be turned on at the same time, LTPO can realize 1Hz~120Hz adaptive refresh rate adjustment. The only regret is that DC dimming is not supported.

Regarding the experience of this screen, there are a few details that I want to talk about. First, the optimization of the high refresh rate is well done, and the commonly used software does not lock frames for power consumption.

For example, platforms such as Weibo, WeChat, Taobao, Station B, Zhihu, and Xiaohongshu can all run at a high refresh rate of 120Hz. Among them, when Weibo and B are watching the video in full screen mode, the frame rate will drop to 60Hz.

▲ The green number on the upper left is the real-time frame rate

The second is the hardware-level MEMC function, which is very friendly to users who like to watch videos. After turning it on, the video can be optimized to 60 or 120 frames. But it should be noted that if you want to optimize to 120 frames, you need to force the resolution of the phone to be reduced to 1080P. If you like to watch sports videos such as ball games, you can try this setting.

Third, when 2K and 120Hz are turned on at the same time, the battery life performance is not satisfactory. The daily perception of LTPO is not very obvious, and the naked eye can hardly see the subtle changes in the screen frame rate, but the power consumption is indeed better than the previous generation OnePlus 8 Pro.

Basically, it is charged once a day on weekdays. On rest days, if you use your mobile phone or travel far away, you still have to recharge the battery or bring a power bank at any time to be at ease.

To be honest, despite the average battery life of the OnePlus 9 Pro, it did not make me feel anxious during use. The main reason is that its charging speed is very fast. The combination of dual-cell battery + 65W wired fast charging + 50W wireless fast charging can quickly "recover blood" from the phone.

From 0 to 100%, the wired fast charge only takes about 28 minutes. Before leaving the house, it takes ten minutes to fill up the battery of the mobile phone, which is basically enough for a day of work and life.

It is worth mentioning that OnePlus comes with a C to C data cable, and the charging head is compatible with third-party protocols such as PD and PPS. Even if you travel far away, you only need to bring a charger from OnePlus. You can use it for fast charging for notebooks, iPad Pro and other devices.

On system issues, OnePlus temporarily compromised

After getting this mobile phone, the huge ColorOS icon on the welcome interface after booting made me a colleague who was a loyal user of OnePlus yelled "Master hydrogen junction".

However, ColorOS, which comes standard with OnePlus 9 Pro, is not a copy of OPPO's system. In the words of the press conference, it is "infused with the soul of hydrogen OS."

For example, the clock and AOD both retain a unique red digital style of hydrogen OS. It is very kind to the old users of OnePlus.

The default color system of global color matching is also the same as that of Hydrogen OS. The desktop layout continues the 5×6 OnePlus style. The wallpaper library is also customized by OnePlus. Mobile phones, text messages, and notification sounds are all in OnePlus style.

If you are an old hydrogen OS user, there is no threshold to get started with ColorOS, and the operation logic can be quickly familiarized. If you haven't used hydrogen OS before, don't worry about the ease of use of the system. The reputation of ColorOS is the top 3 in the Android camp.

I want to share an interesting phenomenon here. Even though there is a huge controversy about Hydrogen OS on the Internet, a few friends around me who use OnePlus phones are singing hymns for Hydrogen OS. After the OnePlus 9 series was equipped with ColorOS, they expressed disappointment.

In their eyes, the negative screen of Hydrogen OS is more beautiful, the theme of "Annual Rings" AOD is very creative and humanistic, the weather page is simple and creative, the information on the system page is clear and easy to operate with one hand… all of these This is why they like hydrogen OS.

▲Hydrogen OS 11

But there is a conclusion that they can reach a consensus with me, that is, ColorOS is more functional than the current hydrogen OS. For example, support for game modes, better-used global search, system clones and other functional modules only exist in the "New Folder" of Hydrogen OS.

So even if the design of Hydrogen OS is full of humanity and rich in Geek temperament, its lack of functionality is destined to be difficult to cater to the mass market. If OnePlus wants to embrace more consumers, it must have the determination and courage to "break the wrist" on system issues.

For users like my friends who strongly admire hydrogen OS, you can flash the OnePlus 9 series ROOT to make it a familiar flavor. After all, OnePlus 9 supports ROOT warranty, so you won’t be afraid of it if it breaks.

So, does the OnePlus 9 series abandon the hydrogen OS, does it mean that "big hydrogen is dead"? I don’t think so. After all, the Hydrogen OS team has not announced its dissolution. It used to be a symbolic hydrogen OS of OnePlus' soft power. It may take a period of dormancy to re-examine and plan its own product capabilities.

Maybe when the OnePlus 11, OnePlus 12 and other models are released, a group of users' excited voices will be heard: "Master Hydrogen Recovery".
