Microsoft plans to complete acquisition of Activision Blizzard next Friday

Microsoft plans to complete its $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard next week, The Verge reports.

The company expects Friday, October 13, to be the deadline when Microsoft will announce to the world that the 20-month process to acquire Activision Blizzard has ended, sources said.

However, whether Microsoft can announce this news as expected by then will also depend on the British antitrust regulator "Competition and Markets Authority" (CMA).

Microsoft and Activision Blizzard recently extended the transaction deadline to October 18 to await the outcome of negotiations with British regulators.

Microsoft received preliminary approval from the CMA last month after Activision Blizzard agreed to sell its streaming rights to Ubisoft Entertainment.

If Microsoft succeeds in acquiring Activision Blizzard, it would mark the biggest deal in the gaming industry.

South Korea considers 68 billion won fine on Google, Apple

According to Reuters, South Korea's telecommunications regulator said yesterday that Google and Apple would fine them up to 68 billion won (approximately 368 million yuan) for abusing their dominant position in the application market.

The two tech giants forced app developers to use specific payment methods and caused unfair app review delays, the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) said in a statement.

The KCC said the maximum fine is 68 billion won, including 47.5 billion won (approximately 257 million yuan) for Google and 20.5 billion won (approximately 111 million yuan) for Apple.

Google responded: "What KCC issued today is a "pre-notice" and we will review it carefully and submit a response. If a final written decision is received, next steps of action will be evaluated.”

Apple issued a statement saying that it disagreed with the conclusions made by the KCC in the report. "The changes we have implemented on the App Store are in compliance with the relevant provisions of the Telecommunications Business Law. We will continue to stay in contact with the KCC and share our views."

In 2021, South Korea passed an amendment to the Telecommunications Business Act, prohibiting app store operators from forcing software developers to use their payment systems.

OpenAI is exploring self-developed AI chips

According to Reuters, OpenAI is exploring manufacturing its own AI chips and has evaluated potential acquisition targets.

OpenAI has discussed various options to address its AI chip shortage since at least last year, people familiar with the matter said.

These plans include self-developed AI chips, closer cooperation with chip manufacturers such as NVIDIA, and diversification of suppliers.

The company has not yet decided to move forward, the report said. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously stated that acquiring more AI chips has been the company's top priority.

He has publicly complained about the scarcity of GPUs, a market dominated by Nvidia. In Altman's view, OpenAI faces many problems such as a shortage of advanced processors and high hardware operating costs.

Industry veterans said that OpenAI's self-developed chips will be a major strategic move and a huge investment, with annual costs that may be as high as hundreds of millions of dollars.

Even if OpenAI devotes resources to the task, success is not completely guaranteed.

Meta pays top creators millions to build AI characters using their likenesses

According to The Information, Meta paid stars such as Snoop Dogg, Tom Brady, MrBeast and Charli D'Amelio to use their likenesses to create virtual AI characters.

For several top creators, compensation could run into the millions each over the years, according to people familiar with the matter.

Currently, these roles are mainly text-based chatbots on Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, but Zuckerberg said voice capabilities will also be launched early next year.

By partnering with high-profile celebrities, Meta may be looking to tap into the large audiences these stars have built up across different platforms.

Creators who have become famous on platforms like YouTube and TikTok have proven that they can get fans to watch content, buy products and use different services, and their AI avatars may have the same impact.

Jobs died on October 5, 2011, after battling pancreatic cancer for many years. After Jobs passed away, Apple held a "Memorial of Steve" event at its Infinite Loop campus, where Tim Cook, Jony Ive and others gave speeches.

Two-finger tap gesture is now available in watchOS 10.1 public beta

WatchOS 10.1 Beta 2, which Apple recently released to developers, adds support for Double Tap.

This is a major new feature for Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 devices.

"Double Tap" allows Apple Watch users to quickly pinch their index finger and thumb twice to interact with Apple Watch with the other hand.

Sensors in Apple Watch detect subtle movements and register them as taps on the display.

The Double Tap gesture can be used to perform single-click actions such as answering or ending a call, stopping a timer, playing and pausing music, taking a nap or turning off an alarm, and more.

Since Double Tap is powered by the S9 chip in Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra, the feature is limited to those models.

iOS 17.0.3 has been released to fix the iPhone 15 overheating problem

On Wednesday, Apple launched the iOS 17.0.3 software update to solve the overheating problem of the iPhone 15 Pro.

Apple acknowledged the overheating issue over the weekend, blaming the issue on a software bug and saying the iPhone 15 Pro's titanium design does not cause any overheating issues.

According to 9to5Mac testing, after upgrading to the iOS 17.0.3 update, the GeekBench score is better than before, which initially indicates that this update is likely to not affect the performance of the iPhone 15 Pro.

ZDNET conducted thermal imaging tests on the iPhone 15 Pro series after the software update and found that the problem of phone overheating during fast charging appears to have been resolved.

One final note is that Apple doesn't appear to be degrading performance, with ZDNET noting any differences in speed or responsiveness between the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
