MateBook 16 experience: a little bit smaller than expected, and a lot bigger than expected

The title of this article is my first impression when I got MateBook 16. You may think I am a "fine score", but this is my true opinion.

"The body is smaller than expected, and the screen is bigger than expected."

The body is smaller than a 15.6-inch notebook, but it has a larger screen with a screen-to-body ratio of 90%. The large screen can be built into a small body, all thanks to the 3:2 screen ratio and 5.2mm ultra-narrow bezel.

Before I got this 16-inch notebook, I was always worried about the size of the 13-inch thin and light notebook. In my opinion, the 15.6-inch notebook is already very large, and it is also the limit of its ability to be used on the back. Whether a 16-inch notebook can even be stuffed into a bag has become a very difficult thing.

However, the 17.8mm body thickness and 1.99 kg weight of MateBook 16 really made me realize-"My lord, the times have changed".

This is a large screen with excellent quality

Large screens may be our most mainstream demand for devices with display screens such as mobile phones, computers, and TVs. However, changing to a larger screen comes with a larger body size. For a notebook, too large volume will lose its portability, and for the comprehensive office experience, it seems a bit outweigh the gain.

A larger screen inside a smaller body is our "real demand", and laptops also need to have a "full screen."

In addition to the screen-to-body ratio of up to 90%, the quality of this screen is also excellent to the naked eye. MateBook 16 uses a screen with a resolution of 2520 × 1680 and a PPI of 189 under 16 inches, which is also delicate enough.

However, the focus of this screen is not the resolution. The real highlight is that it supports 100% sRGB color gamut, 10bit color depth, and 1.07 billion color display. While it can display more colors, the transition between the same color system is also smoother. Slippery, the display problem of color fault can also be better solved.

But what really makes this screen a professional grade is its color accuracy. The color accuracy of MateBook 16 has reached an average ∆E=1 level, and it has become the world’s first Rheinland professional-level color standard certified notebook. computer. After the actual measurement of the SpyderX color calibration instrument, the average ∆E of the MateBook 16 screen in my hand is 0.94, the minimum value is 0.17, and the maximum value is 5.87. The color accuracy of this factory-calibrated screen is already very good, even if you are engaged in design-related work, you can use it right away.

Regardless of whether it is retouching or video color correction, you can use this as a benchmark, without worrying about color cast. Even if you just watch a movie, you will get a good experience, but the 3:2 screen ratio does leave a wider black border on the upper and lower sides of the screen, so that the advantage of the narrow border is of course nowhere. On the other hand, when watching the video of station b, put the barrage on the top so that the barrage will not be missed and the screen will not be blocked. Which is better depends on the needs.

But for browsing web pages and editing documents, this ratio will display more content in the vertical direction and is more suitable for office work.

As the screen becomes stronger, there is also productivity

Another intuitive benefit brought by the increase in the size of the large screen body is that the heat dissipation specifications can be made higher, and higher performance processors can be inserted, and the same processor can also get better performance release. .

This MateBook 16 in my hand uses AMD Ryzen 5800H processor. Thanks to the 7nm process and the 8-core 16 threads of the Zen3 architecture, it has increased the multi-core performance of the previous generation Ryzen standard processor by 20 %. Pressing the Fn+P key can also directly enter the high-performance mode, which can reach the full blood performance release of 54W. After actual testing, the Geekbench single-core running score can reach 1434, the multi-core score is 7224, and the OpenCL test reaches 16608.

MateBook 16 has been rebuilt on the basis of the family-designed "shark fin cooling system". The fan and heat pipe have been redesigned, and two independent air inlets have been added to the middle of the fuselage shaft.

In order to test the heat dissipation performance of this product under long-term and high-intensity use scenarios, I used AID64 to perform a single-bake test on MateBook 16, and used a thermal imager to view the temperature performance of the entire body after a single-bake for one hour.

After one hour of full-load operation, the temperature of the surface of the fuselage has been very stable at this time, and the fan has been "whistling" because of the high-performance mode.

The highest temperature on the C surface is at the two air outlets above the keyboard. The highest temperature is about 47℃. The point worthy of praise is that the highest temperature of the keyboard position avoids the wasd area and is more inclined to the rtfg area. The temperature is 42.5℃. The support part is only 32.5°C, so long-term gaming or full-load operation may not make the keyboard hot to use. However, it is recommended not to put your hands on the keyboard for a long time to avoid low-temperature burns.

Looking at the heat dissipation on the D side, the temperature of the core area reached 51.2°C, which may be due to the fact that the computer was turned over and the temperature of the air outlet decreased. This thermal image can also intuitively see the entire heat dissipation air duct. As long as there is no object on the back of the notebook, heat dissipation is basically not a problem.

Although the fan does make noise in high-performance mode, it can hardly hear the noise in daily use. When browsing the web and processing documents, the fan sound is only 22dB, which is more than the sound in the environment we live in most of the time. It is much smaller and can be regarded as a "silent" fan. Under normal use, it will not disturb others or cut off one's thoughts.

Another advantage brought by the 16-inch notebook is that a larger battery can be inserted into the fuselage to get a longer battery life. MateBook 16 has a large-capacity battery with a rated capacity of 84 Wh, with a battery life of up to 12.5 hours. Even though the daily use may be different, it is not a problem to stick to light work until the end of get off work.

A 135W high-power charger is provided as standard, but unfortunately the charging cable and the charging head cannot be separated, and it is impossible to store the cable and the charging plug separately when storing. Fortunately, this charging power can quickly recover the blood of the computer, which provides another guarantee for the already good battery life. The power charged in 15 minutes is enough to support office work for more than 3 hours, and because it also uses the Type-C interface, it can also charge Huawei's mobile phones super fast.

In terms of expandability, the interface is also completely sufficient. On the left are 2 USB-C+HDMI+3.5mm headphone jacks, and on the right are two classic USB-A interfaces, which are enough for most users, that’s me. There is also the selfishness of wanting to add another network port.

Smart ecology is a new magic weapon to improve efficiency

The core competitiveness of MateBook series notebooks may be its "multi-screen collaboration", which can link across devices and break the barriers between systems.

Under this large-area touchpad, there is an NFC recognition area hidden. The mobile phone can be "connected with one touch" when placed on it. This operation is more intuitive and convenient than other methods.

However, the current experience is still a bit imperfect. When I touch the picture to the computer and send it to the mobile phone, it is clear that the computer has successfully received and displayed it, and the mobile phone has just delivered the animation. But it is really fast. This may be one of the fastest ways to transfer files between mobile phones and computers.

One of my favorite little details of "One Touch" for multi-screen collaboration is that when the projection is successful, the phone screen will naturally go off, as if the phone is really transferred from the hand to the computer. .

But there is also a pity that MateBook 16 does not have a touch screen, so I can’t experience the feeling of sliding the phone screen on the computer screen.

Not only that, another feature of Huawei notebooks is the hidden camera on the keyboard, which automatically pops up when pressed, physically isolating the possibility of stolen camera permissions from stealing user privacy. It's just that when you are in a video conference, it is recommended to sit back or lower your head a bit more, otherwise the shooting angle is still a bit strange.

Although a large 16-inch screen was installed, Huawei did not put a full-size keyboard in this fuselage. The keyboard layout is still the standard layout of a thin and light notebook. However, the large size of the body also brings a larger touchpad, which can ensure the efficiency of work when there is no mouse. However, the feel of the keyboard and the sliding of the touchpad are slightly insufficient, which makes me less interested in working with an external keyboard and mouse.

The empty area on the left and right sides of the keyboard is also made of stereo speakers. Through the design of 3168 front sound outlets, the 2W dual speakers equipped in MateBook 16 have a very good listening experience. It also supports immersive surround sound, and the sound has a strong sense of space. .

In addition to multi-screen collaboration with mobile phones, Huawei MateBook can also be seamlessly interconnected with headsets. Currently, the headset models that support this feature include Huawei FreeBuds 4 and Huawei FreeBuds Pro. When you use Huawei FreeBuds 4 close to Huawei MateBook 16, it will be automatically discovered by the notebook and reminded by the pop-up window, and you can easily pair with just one click. After completing the first pairing, it will quickly and automatically connect each time you use it. In addition, the headset supports simultaneous connection of MateBook 16 and Huawei mobile phones. If there is an incoming call or video conference, the sound can be automatically switched, which is convenient and convenient.

In addition, Huawei MateBook 16 also supports wired and wireless connections with Huawei MateView. Gradually, Huawei products have begun to have an ecological concept.

In general, although the MateBook 16 is not stunning in its design, it can even be said to be quite satisfactory, but it is also quite stable and practical for a notebook computer that is positioned for office.

The workmanship is still quite solid, and the texture and touch are still very good. The damping of the shaft gives me a great surprise. It can be opened and closed with one hand and the shaft will not be too loose, and it can stop at the required angle at any time. Although it may seem like a trivial matter, there are really not many laptops that can do it. It is not a simple matter to control the weight and damping of the screen.

The maximum opening and closing angle of 150° also allows this laptop to work at any angle that is most comfortable for the user, although almost no one will pull the screen to such a large angle.

After using it these days, MateBook 16 has brought me a lot of different feelings. When I opened the box, I was very surprised by its size and weight. Later, I was surprised by its screen. I am also very satisfied with the performance, battery life and workmanship. Although the keyboard and touchpad still have room for improvement, the multi-screen collaboration also allows me to "use it and I can't go back."

In any case, this is a "three good students" that people can't find anything wrong.

Even if it is used for office work, although it is not so portable, the battery life and the large screen will make me feel that the weight of the hundreds of grams is worth it.
