DJI RSC 2 review: foldable, but not just portable

The good show is not afraid of late. After a month's delay, DJI released a new series of professional-grade handheld stabilizers-RS 2 and RSC 2 as scheduled on October 15.

In the two weeks of actual measurement, I replaced the RSC 2 with its predecessor Ruying SC as the main stabilizer for shooting. Next, let’s talk about my actual experience with you guys.

Exterior design

  • New and unique foldable design

RSC 2 continues the overall design language of the previous generation Ronin SC, and the main material is aluminum alloy.

The most intuitive change is the use of a new and unique foldable design. The official said that through different folding methods, RSC 2 can be easily switched in six forms: handheld, upside down, portable, flashlight, vertical shooting and storage.

In shooting video, low-angle shooting is one of the commonly used lens movement methods. Thanks to the foldable design of RSC 2, it is more comfortable to switch to the form required for low-angle shooting.

With the popularity of short videos this year, people have become more and more accustomed to using the vertical screen for shooting creation. RSC 2's unique foldable design allows it to quickly switch between horizontal and vertical shooting. While holding the pan/tilt handle vertically, double-click the M button to enter the vertical shooting mode, and repeat the operation to return to the normal horizontal shooting mode.

Special reminder. Every time RSC 2 is folded and switched between different forms of shooting, do not forget to lock the knob, otherwise it will affect the normal use of the stabilizer.

The foldable design brings the most intuitive feeling is portability. In the recent iPhone 12 evaluation video when I went out to shoot, I chose to carry and store the more portable RSC 2. We made an intuitive comparison. After RSC 2 is folded to the storage form, it is much smaller than A4 paper.

It is worth mentioning that this time RSC 2 is equipped with a newly designed portable storage bag. Compared with the previous foam box, the new storage bag is made of anti-splash and cheap materials, which is smaller in size and larger in space. It is more convenient and safe to carry and carry.

  • One inch tuning screen

This year RSC 2 comes with a 1-inch OLED tuning screen, but it is a pity that this screen is black and white and does not support touch.

With the addition of the screen, it means that you can view the pan/tilt status, power level, etc. directly through the screen on the stabilizer without connecting to a mobile phone.

Directly by simply waving the scroll wheel, quickly complete various parameter settings.

  • Double quick release plate

Compared with the previous generation, RSC 2 uses a more portable and easy-to-use double-layer quick release plate, compatible with Manfrotto and Akka two mainstream interface standards.

In my daily video shooting, the camera frequently switches between the stabilizer and the tripod. Due to the upgrade of the double-layer quick release plate, the efficiency of fast switching between the stabilizer and the tripod is greatly improved.

In addition, the camera screw of the quick release plate is designed to be directly tightened by hand.

This change in detail deserves praise for DJI, because a mature photographer will lose coins or keys!

  • Focus system

RSC 2 adds a front wave wheel, and an integrated follow focus wheel is designed in front of the handle.

The design of the front impeller allows you to adjust the focus point more precisely when shooting, even if you only use one hand to operate it.

  • Optimized structure design

Compared with the previous generation, in terms of leveling, RSC 2 adopts a brand-new knob design, which replaces the plate buckle design of the previous generation. Personally, I feel that the former design is faster for the balance adjustment of the stabilizer. But unfortunately, RSC 2 still uses a buckle design in the design of the leveling and tilting axis.

At the same time, the three-axis pan/tilt lock of RSC 2 has also been redesigned. I personally feel that it is not intuitive and obvious to use than the previous generation's design.

In addition, Nato installation interfaces are added on both sides of the handle, which can install various related accessories such as portable handles.

Here is the rocker design of RSC 2. Compared with the previous generation, the overall design of the joystick is smaller, the actual control feel is not as good as the previous generation, and the damping feel is weaker.

Stabilization performance

Compared to the 1.1 kg weight of the previous generation, the RSC 2 only gained 1.2 kg.

The overall shaft arm length and motor size are increased compared to the previous generation. The torque of RSC 2 motor is increased by 50%, and the maximum load reaches 3 kg, which is compatible with most SLRs and mirrorless singles on the market.

We used Ronin SC and RSC 2 to shoot a few scenes of everyday scenes. By comparing the real shots, it can be seen that under the dual blessing of the newly upgraded hardware and the new Taishan stabilization algorithm, the pictures taken by RSC 2 are more stable and smooth, and the overall effect is greatly improved than the previous generation.

In addition, RSC 2 also supports the super stabilization mode. After it is turned on, the motor torque can be adjusted to further enhance the stabilization effect.

Eagle Eye Wireless Video Transmission System

The new RSC 2 has added a powerful Hawkeye wireless image transmission system. According to the official statement, in the test environment, the wireless image transmission system can transmit 1080p image signals within a range of 200 meters with a delay of only 60 milliseconds.

▲ Wireless image transmission module

The Hawkeye wireless image transmission system can not only transmit video signals, but also support remote adjustment of various camera parameters, and the shooting materials can be cached on the mobile phone.

In addition, with the RONIN App, it also supports Smart Follow 3.0 and mobile phone motion control functions.

▲ Mobile phone motion control

Support fast charge technology

The longest battery life of RSC 2 is further increased to 14 hours. It also supports 18w fast charging, compatible with PD or QC 2.0 chargers, which can meet the needs of long-term shooting.

Regarding the battery, there are two details that need attention.

▲ Ronin SC battery indicator

▲ RSC 2 charging display

First, the battery no longer has a separate power indicator, instead, you can check the remaining power of the machine through the built-in tuning screen;

Second, because the RSC 2 adopts a brand-new foldable design, the battery and the body are an integrated design and no longer can be detached separately.

Creative function

RSC 2 also supports creative functions such as time-lapse photography, "Inception" 360 rotation shooting, and panoramic photography.

During use, we tried to use 360 rotation shooting to unlock the hidden gameplay of the stabilizer.

In general, through the experience of the past few days, it can be seen that the new and unique foldable design of RSC 2 brings a new experience of portable shooting. At the same time, with enough powerful performance, it can easily cope with daily, business trips and other shooting projects.

Today, when the professional-grade handheld stabilizer market is saturated, the designs and parameters of most stabilizer products are gradually converging. In the fierce market competition, DJI extended the folding design of the Osmo Mobile 3 mobile phone gimbal to a professional-grade handheld stabilizer. For the first time, it innovatively adopted a foldable design and found a balance between product portability and performance. .

Every time DJI releases a new product, everyone jokingly claims that DJI is about to revamp its own products.

In my opinion, RSC 2 is not only a self-revolution of the product, but also a new answer and infinite possibilities that DJI brings to the development of future stabilizers.
