In the Windows "ultrabook" camp, Dell's XPS series has always played an important role.
With the release of Intel's 11th-generation Smart Core processor, the XPS product line also ushered in an update. The version we got this time is XPS 13-9310 (2 in 1), hereinafter referred to as the "new XPS 13 2-in-1".
The black box also has a short story. Dell claims that 25% of the material in the box comes from marine plastic garbage collected from coastal areas, while the remaining 75% is made of other recyclable plastics. The box won the CES 2018 Best Innovation Award.
The aluminum alloy shell and high screen-to-body ratio have gradually become the hallmark of the XPS series. Dell's new XPS 13 2-in-1 also continues the design language of the previous model. The body is made of a single piece of 6000 series aluminum alloy, and has been polished by anodizing process to ensure durability and a sense of refinement.
The new XPS13 2-in-1 is available in two color versions: Glacier Silver and Lulu White. The model we got is the Glacier Silver Edition, which is also the most representative color of the XPS series. The silver top cover and the palm rest made of black carbon fiber, in addition to the taste of maturity and business, also have youthful vitality.
The C surface made of carbon fiber material has two main advantages. One is high strength and toughness, and the other is light weight. Thanks to this, the weight of the whole machine is controlled at 1.32 kg, which is comparable to the new MacBook Air equipped with the M1 chip, which weighs 1.29 kg.
In addition, the carbon fiber material has a warmer skin feel. The temperature dropped sharply in these two weathers in Guangzhou. When using the MacBook Pro outdoors, I already felt the coldness of the palm rest. But when using the new XPS13 2-in-1, the experience is much better.
In addition to light weight, small size is also a major feature of the new XPS 13 2-in-1. The thinnest part of the machine is only 7mm, and the width is only 297 mm. Put it on my 15-inch MacBook Pro, like a little toy.
The small size is largely due to the compactness of the fuselage. The new XPS 13 2-in-1 uses a new generation of narrow-bezel MagLev keyboard, which is 24% thinner than standard keyboards. But the hand feel when typing is soft and the feedback is not strong.
The screen has also undergone a brand-new design. The new XPS 13 2-in-1 uses a 16:10 screen ratio for the first time. Compared with previous generations of 16:9 screens, the content display is richer and the look and feel is more comfortable. Too narrow.
The narrow bezel of the new XPS 13 2-in-1 is still eye-catching, and the bezels on both sides of the screen are only 4.18mm. Compared with my MacBook Pro, the latter has a strong "retro style".
In terms of screen quality, the new XPS 13 2-in-1 uses a 13.4-inch 4K UHD+ (3840×2400) resolution anti-blue light touch screen, and the surface is covered with the sixth-generation Corning Gorilla Glass, which is tougher and more wear-resistant.
The look and feel of this screen is better than my 2018 MacBook Pro. Dell said that the screen has a 90% DCI P3 color gamut, is HDR 400 certified, supports Dolby Vision, and has a maximum brightness of 500 nits. With the anti-glare coating, the visual experience is remarkable.
Since it is a two-in-one notebook, its screen naturally supports 360° flip. Using Dell Active Pen stylus, you can simplify office, drawing and other operations, and 4096-level pressure sensitivity also makes handwriting texture more realistic.
The new XPS 13 two-in-one hinge adopts a variable torque design, which is easier to open, and the screen is more stable when flipped or using the touch screen.
In the interface part, the new XPS 13 2-in-1 is equipped with a Type-C interface on the left and right sides, and provides a 3.5mm headphone microphone interface and a TF card reader. Both Type-C interfaces support the Thunderbolt IV standard. In addition, it comes standard with a Type-C to USB-A adapter cable, which allows users to connect external USB devices.
In terms of performance, the new XPS 13 2-in-1 uses the latest eleventh-generation Intel Core processor. The EVO label on the palm rest also means that it has passed the Intel EVO platform certification and is relatively reliable in terms of performance and battery life.
The prerequisite for performance is good heat dissipation. The heat dissipation system of the new XPS 13 2-in-1 has been redesigned. The separate dual fans can cover a larger area, and the 10 elongated heat dissipation holes on the D side also ensure smooth exhaust.
Whether a product’s design and experience are harmonious and unified is of the utmost importance, which determines whether the product can be "applauded and popular." On the whole, the new XPS 13 2-in-1 can well meet the needs of "face value party" and "performance party".
However, as an ultrabook, limited by size and internal space, it is destined not to be a computer designed for heavy work and games. For XPS, small, thin, and stunning are enough.
