Recent attacks on some Italian public institutions have once again highlighted how dangerous cyber threats are. But it is not just a problem of the beautiful country: the ongoing war in Ukraine has highlighted the same problem. Therefore, today more than ever, there is a need to train a new professional figure, the IT security specialist. Yet, although it is so important, few have the right skills. Microsoft will partially resolve the situation with the launch of its new course program: Cybersecurity Skilling.
The situation in Italy and in the world
Ransomware, backdoors , malware of all kinds: in 2021 alone, the Microsoft Security team blocked over 9.6 billion malware threats . Not to mention more than 35.7 billion phishing and other malicious emails. Microsoft Security actively monitors more than 35 ransomware families and 250 unique actors across nations, ransomware and criminal activity. The technology used blocks more than 900 brute force password theft attacks every second .
Given these data, the figure of the cybersecurity professional becomes essential. So much so that in Italy it is among the 25 most requested on the market . Yet only 40% of workers have cybersecurity training. In the United States, for example, the situation is similar, comments Silvia Candiani, CEO of Microsoft Italy. Nearly 2.5 million jobs in this sector are unoccupied. This results in a delay of 287 when it comes to identifying new threats.
In all, it is estimated that by 2025, there will be 3.5 million cybersecurity job vacancies globally . An increase of 350% over an eight-year period, which further underlines the problem of lack of skills.
The Microsoft program, which is part of the Ambizione Italia project, fits into this scenario. This is an important five-year plan by Microsoft Italy launched in 2020 for the relaunch of our country . It is intended for multiple targets and in particular aims to train around 1000 people in the first phase. Microsoft students, business professionals and partners will be able to use it. All with a view to reducing the knowledge gap.
The initiative sees the allocation of 1.5 billion dollars of investment in technology, with the aim of launching the first Microsoft Cloud Region in Italy. By September 2022 it will offer the necessary digital skills to 3 million people in the aforementioned categories. Microsoft places this action plan in a broader global framework that involves more than 23 countries around the world.
Cybersecurity Skilling: An Overview
But what do the courses consist of, and how much will they cost? This was announced a few days ago in Milan by Microsoft Italy, which presented the calendar of events (which can be accessed by registering on the platform).
There will be about 30 free online and local resources to access depending on the category to which you belong.
In the context of Cybersecurity for Companies, Microsoft offers courses on the subject within a training plan called the Enterprise Skills Initiative, aimed mainly at partner companies.
As for students and professionals, the introductory courses in Italian and free of charge provide general knowledge on the concepts of cloud computing, security and compliance . They will also give the opportunity to prepare for the exam to achieve the first level of certification.
Finally, professionals will acquire the skills necessary to implement security controls and identity management solutions based on Microsoft Azure . All accompanied with the initiatives on the Cloud Champion platform dedicated to the ecosystem of Microsoft partners.
Cybersecurity Skilling, Conclusions
Quoting the CEO of Microsoft Italy:
The growth of risks and threats is now there for all to see. Unfortunately, there is a skill gap between companies on the security front and this can cause ( …) a cost of managing the cyber threat on which the longevity of the business can sometimes depend. State-of-the-art technologies are no longer enough, but highly qualified personnel capable of dealing with any critical situation are needed. The talent shortage in this sector is an urgent challenge .
The hope continues that the Cybersecurity Skilling program can bridge this gap. Thanks to the courses and providing companies, students and professionals with a platform to help them face the future with the right tools
