“Air taxi” is reliable this time: it will be used for the 2024 Paris Olympics

But no matter how fast it flies, it is just an unmanned aerial vehicle and is not suitable for urban air traffic. So what kind of aircraft can be used for urban public transportation?

Two seats and 18 rotors make up this VoloCity, which is an electric aircraft capable of vertical take-off and landing. It was launched by Volocopter, a German urban air transportation (UAM) developer, and has now entered the stage of mass production.

The startup described VoloCity as "the most powerful Volocopter to date," which was developed in accordance with the highest aviation standards of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and has received multiple certifications.

"It is strictly designed to meet the needs of urban air traffic," said Florian Reuter, CEO of Volocoper.

The company said that in the development of the previous generation of prototypes, they conducted more than 1,000 test flights, and Volocopter was born out of many problems and improvements.

According to the company, VoloCity has 18 small fixed-pitch propellers on the top of the beam structure, with a motor under each propeller. Through the "small but many" motor scheme, Volocopter successfully suppressed VoloCtiy's noise to the lowest level. The sound produced when hovering at a height of 75 meters is only 65 decibels.

As an urban aircraft, VoloCity has a cruising range of approximately 19 nautical miles (35 kilometers), a top speed of 60 knots (110 km/h), and can carry two passengers and their hand luggage.

In terms of the most important safety, according to Volocopter, Volocity has multiple redundant systems. The rotor, motor, battery, avionics and display all have at least two spare parts, which greatly increases its safety.

In terms of economy, VoloCity's energy does not come from fuel, but from more economical electricity. VoloCity's 18 motors are powered by 9 rechargeable batteries, and its battery swap system allows it to achieve a second flight in the shortest time.

It is understood that VoloCity will be used as an air taxi in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
